The Offical Lian Li PC-A05 Owners Discussion/Modding Thread!

What problems?

Also, these cases are like gold dust! They're getting quite hard to find now, and you seem to pay a considerable premium in a lot of places for a black one. I've been looking for a second hand black one for a while but people seem to be hanging on to them, so they must be as good as you say!

Ocuk have 1 black one in stock, £68 is a bargain aswell, you have plenty posts so free postage :D

Do you have a multimeter, you could test the rails on the psu to see if there outputting the right voltages. either way it really sicks to have aproblem that wont go away, what type of psu is it?

no :(

gigabyte odin GT (550W (more than enough for what i've got)).

edit: this did in fact turn out to be the culprit (back to OcUK with you) and after a frustrating 4 hours trying to get windows vista to recognise the existence of my hard drive (a feat which was only accomplished by using the toshiba recovery disc from my laptop to part install a different version of vista to the hard drive (why this disc could see the hard drive and not my actual OEM copy of vista is anyones guess) so that my vista disc could see something on it to delete and partition).

nearly finished installing, will post pics when i've finished having a mental break down.

mmmmmm it's tempting indeed, though i've recently spent way too much on components and my HTPC budget is at it's limit, so at that price it'd have to wait until I have saved more or if a decent enough 2nd hand one appears unfortunately. :(

@vincent1989

Looks like your best option is going to be to test that PSU on another rig, though use old components if possible in case of the worst. It should be ok since it's a decent brand though.

If it was from OcUK you can rest assured they will take it back if it is faulty in the slightest. I sent them back a Corsair PSU last year and it still appeared fully functional and took full load on my comp, but had previously popped and given out a horrible stench. They took it back with no issues and had a brand new one sent out to me in no time at all, was extremely pleased with the service. I hope you have a similar experience if that turns out to be your problem.

Don't mean to patronise or anything, but do you have a 2nd mobo power connector (i.e. 4-pin ATX or similar) that needs plugging in? That has caught me out before.

see edit :)

Almost a year after my first post in this thread, I have started on my A05 build! :D

The aim of the build is to produce a near-silent yet still fairly powerful system. It'll be used as my main PC at home, and also as a demo/show system for my business. An extremely tidy build is also paramount! ;)

The reason I bought the silver case is that I was going to have it sprayed in automotive paint. Funds don't allow at the moment, but there's no harm in me stripping it down later!

The specification is as follows...
Lian Li PC-A05 in Silver with laser-cut side window.
Asus P5N-D Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3Ghz w/ Zalman CNPS9500-LED Cooler
MSI 'Zilent' 8800GT PCI-X Graphics w/ Zalman cooler
4Gb Crucial DDR2
1Tb Samsung F2 EcoGreen SATA HDD
Samsung cheapy DVD-RW w/ Lian Li drive bay cover
Corsair HX520 Power Supply
Acoustipack sheet
Matrix Orbital 2-line LCD in lower 5.25" bay

I got a few of the components fitted in yesterday (Excuse the poor pic)! The colour match of the Matrix Orbital bezel is better in real life, but my workshop has high intensity lighting which makes it look even worse :(

PSU, CPU HSF, Acoustipack, Matrix Orbital display and a couple of Scythe Gentle Typhoon fans should be with me tomorrow.

Looks good Cybershot. :)

If you really want it "near-silent" I've got a few tips for you:

Ditch the Zalman coolers - they're far from silent.
Undervolt all your fans to 7V or 5V.
Get rid of the restrictive grille on the intake fan - you'll really notice the whooshing noise when your fans are undervolted.

And it's done! :D

It's very very quiet! I am impressed with the Corsair power supply and the Scythe fans.

Acoustipack was cut to size and a little gap left between the sheeting and the motherboard tray, so I could stick the mains extention cable to the bottom of the case and have it near-flush. Also cable-tied the P4 connector onto the mains and brought it up right next to the socket on the mobo.

Not so impressed with the Matrix Orbital drive bay which still doesn't fit properly. It's fitted better after a bit of bending with the heat gun, some pliers and a towel to prevent scratches.

That's extremely smart cybershot, nice work! good to know it's quiet too.

Must be one of the neatest cable management jobs i've seen.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit a 2.5" ssd anywhere (obviously disregarding the 3.5" and 5.25" bays!). I need the other bays for other bits but am quite set on an ssd as a boot drive, so wondering if it would fit down one of the sides, i.e. against the side of the hard drive rack?

Also are the stock lian li fans quiet or is it worth replacing them with sharkoon 1000's? Cheers!

You could use the circle holes on the other side of the HDD rack and tie it with a shoe lace or something?

It is the A05NB - I bought one last week.

Very nice little case. The differences between the 'N' and the 'non-N' have already been highlighted.

However, it appears the modifications have dealt with the hot air accumulation in the top of the old model as the top of mine doesn't get very warm at all (admittedly haven't given it the beasting it deserves as it's the family PC and so cannot be taken out of commission for any time at all)...

I'll post photographs once I've dealt with the cables... :)

Interestingly, the case roof does indeed appear to be removable, making lobotomies that much easier...
