Are you buying a 24" M1 iMac?

The lack of ethernet and reasonable connectivity (USB-A, headphone jack etc) on the base-spec bugs me as it's going to make an already expensive SMB office upgrade (over what they offer currently with the 21.5"), more expensive and adapter/dongle-tastic.

I will need to buy some sort of USB hub...

Following on from @ChrisBuzz, has anyone got any recommendations for a USB-C TB Hub that works with Apple Silicon and supports GB Ethernet, HDMI and headphone jack I/O that isn't horrifically expensive?

If this does not win multiple design awards I would be very surprised. It is one of the most elegant, modern, industrial designs I have seen in years.

Yep they look great. Part of me is a little jealous that I'm not in the market for a casual desktop right now because I'd order one of these in a heartbeat.

There are a few like the Elgato Pro Dock, OWC TB3 Dock, Anker Docking Station etc that look to offer what we would need but at £250-300 per iMac.....it's no bueno.

My go to is Anker -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-PowerExpand-Ethernet-Delivery-MacBook-Gray/dp/B08CKXNJZS
No 3.5mm jack though, that's quite uncommon on USB-C hubs.

Looks ok and with an Apple 3.5mm adapter, it probably makes it one of the cheaper options compared to other docks available.
Is the HDMI output likely to be DisplayLink/software based?

It's a reasonably good looking machine but it's essentially the casing from the iPhone/iPad Pro (without the camera-bump) enlarged with a few extra ports; i'd argue the G3's were more revolutionary in terms of design compared to what we're seeing with the latest iMac.

Can I ask why you need a dock? It has Gig Ethernet and a 3.5mm audio jack built in. All I see that isn't is a USBC/TB3/USB4 etc to HDMI? which come in cables.

I'm going to wait until the reviews, but if the screen is as good as I hope it will be this can replace my Mac Mini and be my only non-portable device going forward, I can sell the Mini/Monitor then.

For my use the power is far more than adequate. Development/Infrastructure/Automation isn't power hungry in my case, hasn't missed a beat on the Mac Mini.

You're right, supposedly the new iMac does have a 3.5mm headphone jack and i completely missed that while skimming the photo's and spec last night.

Base-spec still doesn't include ethernet, so will need to either option that (via the power-brick; ~£30), use an adapter or, as i need HDMI + USB-A as well, just grab a hub of sorts.

If budget allowed, i'd be spec'ing mid-spec iMac's and save some of the hassle but it'll be difficult enough to get budget for base-spec's with the £150 difference over the predecessor :(

Keep an eye on the 2nd hand market. I picked up one of these for about £20...

Works perfectly with a normal Intel 2020 iMac, but don't know about the M1.

I also have an almost identical unit from StarTech (model TB3DK2DPPDUE) for about £70 which works too. It's basically the same - probably came from the same factory.

I have a more expensive Caldigit dock which work gave me for my MacBook Pro. It works fine when plugged into the M1 MacBook Air.

Unfortunately as it's for business it will all need to be new. Although StarTech looks to be a good shout (if it works on M1) and they don't appear to be terribly expensive either.

I remember seeing the G3 on display in harrods and being stunned by how amazing they looked. I was 12-13 years old :D

They were pretty glorious, in fact the whole G3 range was fairly good looking compared the usual sea of beige boxes at the time.

showing your age there bud, the g3 launched in '98 :p

Tell me about it :(
