Are you buying a 24" M1 iMac?

Heh, I was saying to some friends yesterday how I think she's mellowed over the last few years. That was before these most recent videos though :D

I still don't want a 24" M1 iMac.

She does get a bit excited when it comes to new Apple stuff.

I certainly don’t need an iMac but they are quite shiny and the colour coded accessories are a nice touch for the target market.

I’d not recommend the low end one to anyone though but the next one up is more than fine for who should be buying it.

You're right, the colour accessories are much nicer than I expected them to be. I wonder if they'll offer the 27" replacement in different colours. I never thought I'd say it but the blue is actually quite appealing.

I’m surprised there are a few posters on here getting the 24” when there is undoubtedly a larger more powerful version coming. The old 21.5” wasn’t exactly a huge seller with posters here.

Is the the new screen that puts this iMac in a much better position than the old one?

Over the years I’ve realised there is not much I use that would benefit from more power. I used to be about buying top spec machines and it made no meaningful difference to my usage.

The M1 with 16GB can handle raw photo editing no issues and that’s the most demanding task I use my PC for. My day job involves Office suite and cloud based software.

I prefer a smaller screen and sitting a bit closer, used a 24” LG UltraFine for a while and enjoyed it, this screen has even more resolution.

24" M1 iMac
Native: 4480 x 2520
Retina: 2,240 x 1,260
PPI: 218.73 pixels per in

24" LG UltraFine
Native: 3840 x 2160
Retina: 1920 x 1,080
PPI: 185.9 pixels per in

I think it’s fair to say it’s the screen upgrade over the old version that sold it?

The old 21.5” had a pretty rubbish screen when compared to the 27” iMac, I don’t think that will be the same case this time round. Sure it will be bigger but I doubt it’s going to offer a significant quality advantage unless they surprise us with mini led.

I wouldn't say the 21.5" was rubbish, it had the same specs as the 27" but it's just smaller. On the new iMac, 2,240 x 1,260 (retina) is very usable, a step up from 1080p which is what you usually get on 24". The 24" UltraFine is 1080p when using retina.

It’s 1080P with scaling though, that’s so much sharper than just regular 1080P which is what the old outgoing model had.

Thats what I meant by it having a comparatively poor screen to the 27” 5k iMac but the two are much closer together now.

The more I think about it the more I’m tempted to pick up the mid tier version, but not right now. I’ll keep an eye on it and possibly in a few months time there might be a flash sale like Amazon had for the MacBooks and Mini a while back. Maybe pick up the mid tier iMac for similar money as the base spec now…wishful thinking? Probably :p

The old 21.5" was true 4k so it scaled higher than 1080p, I made a post early comparing them:

21.5 Retina iMac

Can't wait to see more user feedback on these. So torn between one of these and a Mini and my own monitor.

What monitor would you go with that would even come close to the 4.5K on the iMac? This is what has always been difficult for me and the Mac Mini. You could pair with a 5K UltraFine, but that's almost the cost of the iMac by itself.
