****The Official 5G Home Broadband Thread**** (Three/EE/Vodafone/etc)

As long as you send them back the device that you raised the request against then that's case closed. They won't test it, find out it works, and then want to swap back.

5 months on Three 5g has been great. Their support is ****, but the service a lot better than when it launched when I first tried it.

I wouldn't notice it's wireless rather than cable. Gaming is fine and I've seen around 800mbit download speeds off-peak. Bargain for £20 a month vs what Virgin were asking for only 50mbit.

Exact same here, any chance you have tried hell let loose on an xbox, it seems that game doesn't like 5g, wondering if many others are the same....?

It's because the MTU is to low on the APN the router comes set to and some games dont like it. People have been complaining about it for ages on their forums. Three's support are of course clueless and don't even know what an MTU is.

You need to set it to manual and change it from "3internet" to "three.co.uk", which is the one they use for phones. Not sure why they did that, but it seems to be a 5g broadband issue in general and not just the UK. Probably penny pinching on bandwidth is the reason.

Another thing I've noticed is ISPs using transparent proxies on 5g to force their own DNS and filtering. Even if you add your own it still sends data to them and being Chinese routers I don't trust them. So you kinda need your own router and VPN.

Just got my 3 unlimited data sim and have been having a play around with where I might place a router. My fiber connection to the house gives me around 75mbps and using my phone on 5G I can get an average of 75mbps too. The upload is twice as fast as my fiber at around 30mbps. So I am pretty happy with the speed considering it is only costing £6 a month vs £22 for the fiber connection.

I was hoping to get away with using 4G because of the cheaper routers but the speed is a bit less consistent and a bit slower although not by a huge amount, around 50mbps.

So my questions are would a proper 4G router deliver more speed vs my phone if sat in the same location due to the bigger antennae? What is the go to 5G router that offers best bang per buck? Thanks in advance.

Got my Zyxel NR5103E set up with my 3 data sim and my first impressions are wow. I saw speeds up to 140mbps down and 40mbps up vs the 80mbps downs and 20mbps up of my fixed line broadband. The router says I am getting an excellent signal -77 RSRP and -9 RSRQ.

Then at 3pm on the dot the speed dropped to 30mbps down but the upload stayed at 40mbps. When doing a speed test it stays at almost exactly 30mbps the whole test like it is being limited. Are 3 throttling download speeds at certain times?

Which APN is it using?

Just on this I have a similar experience with my mobile on Smarty (Three network). When doing a speedtest it is limited to 50Mbps download. Won't budge past it. Upload is like 100Mbps. I do have a paid for VPN service with Nord, and what I've had to do is set it to use an "obfuscated" server using UDP. With that set and turned on, speedtest is back to normal. Weird! So I think there are some quirks with Three for sure. As I say I'm back on EE atm and not seeing any problems like that.

I just checked the 3 network status checker and they are apparently doing work in my area. Might be the reason for the slow speeds. Anyone got any idea how long works usually take or is that like asking how long is a piece of string?

So I recently got a IDMobile sim, and was suprised to see I get 5G in my house even though both Three and ID say I don't, I checked speeds on Steam and its like 8-9mb/s for my current FTTC and around 12mb/s for my phone hotspot so got me thinking since my area probably won't see FTTP for forseeable future and I can't yet buy a 5G router from Three could I just get a unlimited data sim from ID and a zyxel router?

My speeds seemed to have increased again. Back up to 100+ Mbps. The strange thing is Ookla speed test is giving me these high readings but when I download a game on Steam I only get about 50Mbps. Anyone know why that might be?

I should be able to download at least at 100mbps if my connection is capable surely? That is only 12.5MB per second.

My fixed line can comfortably max out the connection at 75mbps.
