****The Official 7900 overclocking thread****

I think its best to just forget about it and stay on topic. Speaking of which :D i have done the 1.4v mod, not overclocked yet but my idle temp has increased by 2 degrees. Will overclock some more soon!

For anyone that isnt sure, this is the stuff used for the volt mod -

And i took the opportunity to take a pic of my 7900gt with the Zalman VF900 fitted -

Agreed

Top stuff :D

And keep us posted :)

Yes they seem to be easier to mod as parts are close enough together you can paint them, but the smd's are easy to solder, fair more so than a ecc leg for vcore mod on mobos.

Paint = easy and reversable for RMA with no trace.

PEACE :D

Bickering isnt my favourite read, and ive been in touch with easyrider for a while, and he offers, sound truthful helpful advise in this thread, and in many others. I regard anyone who helps out at a drop of a hat, a personal friend, and will fight in their cause...Ok !!!!... TTFN

Couple questions for Johanson, what difference did the zalman make to your temps, prior/after paint mod, and how noisey is it?

Thanks

I have to say the new zalman is very quiet considering its performance. At lowest rpm, silent.
At highest rpm, quieter than the average case fan, and quieter than any previous zalman coolers.
Thats as good as i can describe really, but unless your pc is totally silent, the noise will not bother you in any way. Buy it now :D

As for temperatures, i will mention them when i post my results soon!

OK, with my core clocked very high (not saying yet), above a certain point it seems to slow itself down, scoring me 8500 3dmark05 points.
Is there a reason why it is slowing itself down above a certain point? The temps arent that high, and it only slows itself down at like 125 degrees, right?

Final results very soon!

Its ok now, ive sorted it all out.

After the 1.4v mod, my final overclock is 660/1800 (had to knock the memory down a bit, it must have been too hot!)

3Dmark05: stock 8000, overclocked 10,750
3Dmark06: stock ????, overclocked 4810

Screenshot (not very good, but i cant be bothered) The memory clock on ati tool shows 450mhz for some reason, multiplied by 4 its 1800.

My temps are now 45 degrees idle, 65 degrees max load.
So load has increased by 13 degrees with the mod. Im no longer sure about a 1.5v mod, might be too much for even a VF900. I definatly do NOT reccommend a higher voltage than 1.5 without water cooling.

A score of 10,750 is pretty close to/as good as a 7900GTX, if im not mistaken! So thats £400 performance for just £245 :D thats including the Zalman.

Its not £400 performance though without your extra 256mb ram - give us poor sods that bought GTX's something to cling to :p

Odd, I gained 20-30MHz from 1.4v to 1.5v, then upto what i'm at now (710MHz) with 1.55v

Are you sure you did the mod right? Might be worth having another go at it, what I wouldn't do is try the 1.55v mod untill you're sure the 1.5v mod works as i'm not sure what would happen with the below pic:
