****The Official 7900 overclocking thread****

lol just got to page 12 and noticed you post there, you heard anything about the possible bios mods? I won't be soldering anything.

Yeah decided to join the fun.:)

Well its early days i think. But TBH its all a bit over my head. Will need to read more I think.

I won't be soldering anything myself. And the card is fast enough but if they mod a bios that works i'll flash it.

So basically:

NV decide to make 7900GT's and GTX's both have 24 pipelines, unlike the 7800's (20 vs 24 pipes)

the downside of this is they don't want anyone to have GTX performance from a GT, so they starve the GT of GPU voltage, all we need is a voltage regulator override and we should get some impressive overclocks, 650MHz+

Fingers crossed that Nibitor come up with the goods:)

The RAM is very different too though. 1.1ns vs 1.4ns.

Even so with 650 mhz core and 1800 mhz memory who cards about the different memory timings.

I doubt there would be that much in it.

Fingers crossed they get that bios sorted.

Well because it makes a big impact. There isn't one from 1.2ns to 1.1ns but there is quite a large difference from 1.1 to 1.4. Stating also that a 1.4ns GT @ 1800mhz memory clock is anywhere near a 7900GTX is wrong. One need only adjust memory timings and run a 3Dmark to see the difference. Sometimes is can be as much as 500 '05 points. That is a hefty difference. And I haven't seen any GT's yet hit 650mhz on normal cooling. 610 or so I think is the highest I've seen, though I'm not discounting the fact that there will be some that do more, but these are probably rare. And this is just comparing one card to itself with different timings/frequency. The core was the same speed in both. The RAM chips on the 7900GT are rated to 700mhz - anything above that is achieved with VERY relaxed timings - I highly doubt manufacturers check the millions on IC's before putting them on the cards to speed bin them.

I don't think anyone has stated that a 1.4ns GT @ 1800mhz memory clock is anywhere near a 7900GTX .

The fact is at 600/1800 its a quick card for 199 quid.Just about to order me another. :p

If there is only few hundred points in it over the 7900 GTX then I can live with that. :)

Yes, it is a quick card but not this ooo, GTX performance for GT prices. Not anywhere near in all honesty. And it won't and isn't a few points between this and the GTX as the result I stated was one card compared against itself. Imagine thus difference on a different scale whereby the 1.1ns stuff is rated at 1800mhz default. Tighten that up and whoa, it will stomp all over the GT. It won't be a few points, it will be one heck of a lot.

I don't doubt the value of the GT but it must be kept in perspective.

I agree. But if they do come out with a bios that increases Vcore then for the money It offers stonking value.

After all the only limits on the overclock is voltage.I'm not saying GTX performance for a GT.

But taking into account the 160 quid saving over a GTX then the money saved could well outweigh the loss of performance.

At that price point it would be a hard card to beat.If the core can be overclocked to 650 mhz.

it would be interesting to bench a 7900 GT running 650/1800 1.4ns against a stock 7900 GTX running 650/1600 1.1ns

And actually see how close, or indeed as you say, far apart they would be.

Ns is only the speed rating though isn't it, wouldn't 1.1Ns memory clocked at 1800MHz perform the same as 1.4Ns memory clocked at 1800MHz?

Yup.

Ns is just the chips rated speed. two chips with different ns ratings but running the same clock speeds will give the same bandwidth/speed.

Aren't the timings different due to speed binning? 1.1ns with do tight timings at 1800mhz whilst running 1400mhz rated higher will require looser timings.

Well I was going to order another 7900 GT and run SLI at the last minute ordered a 7900 GTX

I figured with the added cost of getting a zalamn VF900 for £30 I might aswell get the quieter 7900 GTX. :D

Can someone confirm how loud the 7900 GTX fan is please?

Thanks

so you decided to get one gtx instead of sli gt?? Or are you going to sli that gtx now?

Yeah in the end I decided to get one 7900 GTX.I originally bought the 7900 GT EE.And although I got a great price and the card is fantastic the cooler was going to have to go.

After I worked out how much a zalman vf 900 was going to cost me and add this to the price i paid for the 7900 GT.It was the better option to spend that bit extra on the 7900 GTX.

I have ordered it but its not in stock but hopefully I'll get it some time this week.

Even if I had decided to get an x1900xt by the time I bought a zalman for it it would cost the same as a 7900 GTX so thats the route I took.

7900 GTX hopefully this week.

LoL... after all that noise about a 7900GT, you've gone for a GTX. I'm sure that bit extra in cost wasn't that little. :)

well i got the 7900 gt for £235 the faster EE running 520/1500 and the zalman was going to be 35 delivered.

So this made total cost £270

got the 7900gtx for 340 so after i get my money back from the 7900 gt I spend an extra £70 for the 7900 gtx,not a lot in my book.

an x1900xtx at reduced price and the zalman would have cost the same so decided on the 7900 GTX

Don't get me wrong I would have kept my 7900 GT but with aftermarket cooling the 7900 GTX was just to close in financial terms not to get.

Yeps.... I thought we were referring to the £199 7900GT that's all. :)

Well... your 7900GT benchmarks were impressive, but I've always had my sights on the 7900GTX. :) Tell us how you get on with the GTX. As I'm still looking for a graphics card to replace this Voodoo.

I will do.TBH I'm not expecting a massive peformance boost over my 7900 GT clocked at 560/1640.

The interesting thing is that the 7900 GTX will be the first 512mb card I have owned and it will be interesting to see if it makes that much difference .

I know benchmarks will increase, but in real terms I'm not expecting to much.Just a bit more quiet. :p
