****The Official 7900 overclocking thread****

My first volt mod

Nothing new or spectacular, but as this is my first ever volt mod I thought I would share.

XFX GeForce 7900 GT Extreme Edition factory clocked @ 520/1500

At stock voltage, coolbits detect only gave me a rather dissapointing 522/1522. Load temps on stock cooler 62°C.

First, I fitted a Zalman VF900. Load temps dropped to 46°C, coolbits detect remained the same, as expected.

Then I did the 1.4v mod. Load temps rose to 55°C, coolbits detect now gave me 562/1680. The core speed was a bit low, but the memory increase came as a surprise; does this mean the memory clock is in someway synced to the core?

ATI Tool offered me a much more respectable 622/1660. Benching at this gave me:

3DMark05 – 10,102
3DMark06 – 5,091

I’ll probably run at 620/1600 day-to-day.

IT troll. When I was at 1.4v I ran about 620/1700 day to day too.

I'm at 1.55v now (temperatures barely rose!) and run 660/1700 or so day to day. The extra kick on the core has put me into the comfortable zone when playing oblivion on max (with HDR) at 1600x1200.

EDIT: Temperatures have risen a bit. Now at 57c under load. That's still almost as good as the stock cooler with just 1.2v.

What are your idle temps now? I'm on 1.5v mod and at 630/1800... and idle at 43-46c (Room Temperature: 24-26C).

Will your memory not go higher? a lot are running 1800

Regardless though great clockers and Bang for buck ;)

Quite a difference in scores... how well you do in 3DMark06 falls down to your CPU.

My stock 7900GT at 560/1600 scored 5,409 in 3DMark06...

But only 9,723 in 3DMark05...

Will run some tests now and see what scores I get on my new clock settings. :)

Idle temps around 36-40c (depending no ambient temperature) with the fan on max and a vcool underneath on max too. I tested yesterday afternoon too after several hours of gaming and it idled at 41 with the vcool on minimum.

Hi guys....just a word of WARNING about doing the mem mods on these cards....it is advised by top overclocker on another forum to not vddr mod the cards at all as it will 9/10 times mess the card up....you may say well mine is fine....but for how long?....this is why i've never fancied the mod at all....better to be safe than sorry. :D

Thanks for the advice, though I was never tempted to do the memory mod, I'm already running it at 1800Mhz. :)

I have just finished building my new system and thought I would try and overclock the EVGA 7900GT KO that I have and using Coolbits to autodetect I am now running at 553Mhz, 1682Mhz which seems pretty good to me.

it will go higher use ati tool

Just thought I'd share my experiance briefly to those clocking the nuts off these card. I've found that the memory, at the very top end is becoming less stable after repeated extreme overclocks. At 1800+ it's unstable now, though when it was new I could get up to 1850. I'm now running 1666 and it's fine, but I'm watching carefully to see if the top end falls further. Did a few benhmarks and it was stable at 1750, but I'm not planning on pushing it that far for regular play.

On the plus side i'm getting a second one on monday. I think I'll be happy with just 7900gtx speeds though for SLi (maybe EE speeds, we'll see).

At your current clock speeds in your signature... what 3DMark06 benchmarks are you receiving?

I'm still on 1800MHz on the memory and it seems to run fine (stock was 1650MHz) with core at 630MHz, though I'd like to increase the core further.

11k in 05 and 5.2k in 06. With the memory lower the core seems more stable though. While I was at 1750 mem the core would only remain stable at 650, but it can hit 680 now without any problems (so far), so i've not actually lost any speed.

EDIT: I should note though that 'stable' in the above comment means gaming stable. It benchmarks stable at nearer 700/1770 (but i'm guessing that's not too healthy for the memory, so I don't plan benching at that high any more).
