***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Black imo...

on FM2008:

"Minimum – Windows XP/Vista. 1.2Ghz Processor. 256MB Ram. DirectX8.1 compatible sound card. 4xCD Rom drive, 1024x768 32Bit display. 750MB HD space. MS compatible mouse & keyboard."

The display resolution might be an issue as the Eee is designed for 800x480... the CPU should be ok at 900MHz but I'm not sure if its actually running at 900MHz at the moment.

By default they don't - you have to flash the BIOS and then manually change the FSB speed - even then at 900mhz there's been lots of reports of bugging out.

Just the slight step and size and price to the 10" makes it far more comparable to a 13" laptop and you would be able to get a far better deal for the money.

I've ordered my eee pc but what attracted me to it was the fact it is so tiny, an asset that will be diinished by the increase to the larger screen.

Theres also a moderate chance of bricking the unit with the beta BIOS so its just not worth it atm - I hope they release a BIOS with the proper speed soon tho.

Also note that while there is an RJ11 socket for a 56K modem there is no hardware internally for the modem so thats another advertised feature thats not correct.

The keyboard is smaller than I expected. A comparison against a foldable bluetooth keyboard shown. The bigger keyboard is more comfortable, while the eeepcs I am having to be more precise in 'jabbing'.

Not that hard - but you really need to find a small but reasonably fast HDD imo for XP as SD isn't really upto long term XP useage...

Performance wise its upto it - tho it'll be a lot better if they ever get it running at full speed...

I am pretty much sold, but I have a couple more questions for the people with thier new toys or anyone who might know.

First, does it have enough power on the usb ports to power an external notebook hdd(specifically the ones with dual usb jack to single usb jack cables) for extended periods without mains power?

Next up, could anyone or has anyone tried a usb freeview tuner one one? How well does it cope with features like recording and live pause?
Could an eeePC have two or more tuners connected sky+ style, even with a 'custom' linux os(maybe mythtv), and stream via wifi? Stick one in the loft and even with an external powered usb hub and hdd, it could be cheaper to set up and run than any pre-built solution.

Any idea about the internal expansion port? I have heard that it's a note book pci-e slot. Does it show up any where, such as in the bios, native os or xp and any other os or app? What does the slot potentually add expansion wise?

Finally. Is this thing a flash in the pan or not? Will the community be able to make the eeePC more than a gizmo? Mods, hacks, overclocks:D, upgrades, even more models?
Or will it just be a big pda with a keyboard (not that that is for the price)?

eeePC fanboy.:D

Folk on the Eee Forums have ran external drives via usb, someone mentioned he had a Lacie 80g which ran fine even on battery.

It seems to be getting more popular, when I joined the EeeUser forums a few weeks ago there was 800 people registerd now theres 2221 and its growing everyday.

Just check the Eeeuser wiki to see how many folk are contributing to doing stuff on the Eee.

Unfotunatly the mini pci-e port seems to have been removed on the UK models :(

I believe the USB slots on one side are "powered" and suitable for running external HDDs, etc. from them tho it will have an impact on battery life I'm sure, I'm not sure about the left hand USB port tho as its marked differently in the diagram.

these look fun just for the tinkering alone. Im encouraging the mrs to get one for xmas(i cant afford to get her one cos im a student BUM)
Ill be having lots of fun playing with it :d

Just got the 1" HDD - powers off the USB port fine, transfer rates aren't terrific but should be just about good enough for Windows XP, cached reads are about 320MB/s and the drive has 2Mb cache so that should help - but raw buffered reads are only avg. 9.2MB/s.
