***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Put quake 3 on it under the default linux install heh after messing with the sound (have to remap the device in memory) got it to run...

With all settings maxed at 800x480 is gave a less than inspiring 29.6fps in timedemo four... but atleast it ran and sound aside I didn't have to mess with anything else out the box to get quake 3 working... and the sound thing is a common problem with linux.

Ive got both now...white going back but ive taken some pictures for anyone whos undecided.

Even though there not great.

just posting on my black one now and definitely impressed. Have tried some divx's off an external hdd and wireless browsing is great. Must admit that I was worried about the screensize but it is pretty good, Will keep linux but install xp on either a sd card or usb stick. seems to do everything out of the box once wireless is configured.

Im pretty impressed the laptop seems well made, sound / video is good and has the essentail apps on it. Not had a chance to do much on it today but ill prob try a few linux distros on it soon. Might see how reading pdfs in bed goes tonight :)

Is there a recovery software? Say if you install something and kills the pre-installed OS.

Yeah its supplied on a cd and you shift it to a flash drive and then change the boot priority in the bios to USB.

Also i think you can put the same CD in a USB dvd/cd drive.

Random request, but...
Could some one take a picture of the keyboard with a 30cm ruler (or some visible scale) across it, from above. Just to get the idea of how small the keyboard is.
Also, does the UK plug have flip away prongs like the 2 pin American one and do they match the colour of the eeePC they come with?

I will when I get back home. Much easier having this little beauty for wireless at uni, than spending 45 mins trying to find a pc. Already had 4 people come over and ask what it is, and its only 9:45. The keybord is very small, but after about 20 mins i'm able to touch type on it with only a few missed buttons. And its got the girlfriends seal of approval as to my purchase, and we all know how important that is.
Also the plug is as described above, I've got the white one and it matches the eee in colour, I presume that the black one is the same. Also it doesn't have a power brick attached, its much like a phone/ ipod charger in size etc.

ok i have put xp on it. got quake3, open transport tycoon and star wars galactic battlegrounds on it. also got a few apps and everything work fine.

its well documented that you want to minimise internal disk usage, and this is the way i have tackled the issue:

- i installed full xp on the internal drive, (e.g. not used nlite)

- i have removed the page file (i.e. set as 0, and deleted the pagefile.sys on the root). no problems encounted as of yet.

- i have removed internet explorer (through add/remove windows components) and am using firefox portable instead ("installed" on the internal drive). i assume firefox portable does not cache web pages? anyway im sure it writes to the disk a lot less then internet explorer.

- i want to avoid having a sdcard permanently in the slot for xp temp files / caching etc. i want to be able to use the sdcard slot like i would a floppy drive, and not for xp to crash if i remove it.

any thoughts? pointers? questions?

p.s. dont have a camera here, but the whole keyboard dimensions are 206mm x 76mm, so if you want to draw a rectangle on a piece of paper that should give you an idea of what you are dealing with

took to work and people comments are intresting.

They all comment on how cool, small, light, good the screen is then they ask me " does it have windows?"

I reply " No its a custom OS ,linux, but you can put windows on it"

they then say " yer its ok but I'd rather have a proper one?"

I mean WTF are people that brainwashed that if its not windows its not a proper Pc?

why i have put xp on:

1) the default linux i found too restrictive, e.g. :

- very little (zero?) extras/goodies in the repositories and i encounted problems when i tried adding things to the repositories.

- when i played media over wifi, rather then stream the file it copied it in full to a cache directory first. only when it finished did it then play. i can decide if a file is too big to stream or not thank you. i did manage to get vlc media player installed, but this did the same, so i assumed this caching system was decided at the operating system level.

2) couldnt get ubuntu on! (see my earlier posts). im sure i could have done with perseverance but after 2 days of frustration i just wanted to play with my new toy!

3) as already said, most lay-people wont consider it a "true pc" without windows on it and therefore would have less of a wow factor without xp. shallow i know but what you gonna do

i am sure asus will improve their o/s over time, and i wouldnt be surprised if a eeebuntu comes out in the future.

A Live /install eeebuntu will be ideal, setup correctly with only drivers needed for the machine, also correct partition and limited writes configured.

Heres a picture with a tape measure extended to 30CM - don't have any 30CM rulers to hand... I also put a DVD case in there to give an idea of the size.

My phone's camera doesn't handle scenes with a lot of black too well unfortunatly.

Just had it running for almost 4 hours played an entire movie, tested quake 3 on there (using the default linux installation) streamed music, with the wireless enabled and display up on full brightness and its so far lasted slightly under 4 hours - had the popup saying it will shutdown in 3 minutes come up but so far its still running 15 minutes after that... so not bad imo.

UPDATE: roughly 20 minutes give or take a minute or two from the 3 minute warning the battery went critical and the device powered off... From a full charge and really hammering it I got pretty much 4 hours useage out of it that time :)

EDIT: Until I have time to get XP running on it I can't confirm anything - but despite saying its running at 900MHz I get the distinct feeling its actually running slower than that - probably 630MHz or whatever it is thats been mentioned on other forums.
