***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Ive been trying to connect to my wireless network with my EEE, i select the network, enter the pass key and click ok, it the says its setting up interface and then pending... and then it just sits there for ages, not doing anything. i wondering whether this is because to connect our other PCs to the network we had to have a disc in our computer to connect us to the live box router. will this mean i cant connect to the internet until 1. i get an external cd drive and 2. i have xp on my eee to enable me to run the application to connect me? has anyone else with an orange livebox got connected from linux?

I may have missed this or maybe im just stupid..

But when they say pc anywhere do they just mean anywhere near your wifi point?
Or can you actually use it anyhere like the Iphone??

what's is the latest model of asus eee pc and should i be getting 1 now or wait for a newer version?

thanks
The Asus 900 is on pre-order, the 701 and Surf is out atm.

Depends whether u want to pay £100+ more for an 8.9" screen, 12-20GB SSD and more RAM.

What speed do you guys have the cpu running at?

Been trying my hand at OCing the ol' Eee for a couple days now. So far so good, but it is getting a bit warm. Gonna leave Prime going for a bit longer to see how it holds up.

Ive just ordered;

Soldering Iron
Tiny (.5mm) soldering iron tip
Solder
Solder remover
Kapton tape
Double sided foam tape
Small 4 way USB hub
Small SD card reader
Small bluetooth dongle
Corsair 16Gb Class 6 SD Card

And still to come after some more research;
USB TV adapter
USB GPS receiver
USB HSDPA receiver

Anyone want to place bets on how long my eeepc will survive this frankenstein operation? :D

you going to intergrate them all into it or have them sticking out? and either way it will last a really long time.... just an espensive paper weight :p

All internal :) Im mounting the SD card reader in the ram bay, and will be putting the 16GB SD card in it as a second harddrive, I can then keep the external one as a removable drive (possibly booting OSX or Linux off it). The bluetooth is so i can use thing like BT mice and connect to my phone etc. (you can also get BT SD cards, so i want to see if you cn get CF ones as well and put it in my camera to shoot wireless and tethered). The GPS, TV and HSDPA would hopefully also be all added internally if they will fit, and will allow me to watch TV and surf the internet whereever I was. And to top it off I would also have built in satnavv. The ultimate gadget!:D

How much did that lot set you back?

I would never have the confidence to take a soldering iron to any electrical device, especially a computer/laptop. :eek:

What is the sound like in these little boxes?

And what about the advantages of using one with a USB soundcard for top quality output?

They are utterly silent, and with something like Foobar might manage ripped CDs better than a Squeezebox if only because they have a bigger screen.

Well there's enough people here (including me) lined up to buy the 900, so I don't think Asus will have a problem shifting them. I also don't agree anyway, for me the coolness and me wanting one is about three things - size, weight and price. The size and weight are still completely fine, and the price is still under half of what you'll pay for most other UMPCs. And having used a 701 in my local retail outlet, I honestly found the screen too small and too low res, plus the touchpad was too small and 4GB is too little storage (how about a 12gb + 16gb SD card). So that's 4 important things the 900 will improve on, which to me makes it worth the extra money.

Agree completely with this.

It's all relative. Saying you can get a 'full blown' laptop for similar money as the 900 is expected to cost isn't a valid argument IMO due to other, similarly priced laptops having a much larger foot print and the people in the market for these wont want a bulky heffer to carry around. ;)

If you want something that's as small as possible yet fully usable without the £1k+ price tag, the 900 would be the only option.

I'm seriously considering selling my Sony Vaio and getting a Eee after the 900 launch (I'm still debating which one).
