***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

these machines are fine for XP but i wouldn't bother with Vista, it will run but performance will obviously be subpar.....the 901's aren't anymore powerful than the 701.

if you want nice eye candy it runs Gnome + Compiz Fusion very nicely on an Arch build, amazing really considering the price.

i hope the price is correct on that Linux 901 :)

So what do people think? Worth it? I'm looking into the XP one. :)

Cant you pay the same for the Linux one - and install XP? And get an extra 8GB?

I think being £330ish is a bit high, imho. Thats going towards a good laptop spec, but the 701 i have is still fine :). May consider it later though.

Hmm, could do and see how the Linux one works out. XP is pretty cheap to buy isn't it? How large is the Linux OS compared to XP? :)

I did a quick look around and it seems white is the only option? Also as you rightly say, the price is high and goes into the 15.4" C2D area which is a shame as i only want the EEE due to its size.

If I was to buy the 901 then Linux version would be the only option for me. More space, then just install WinXP yourself :) I would imagine Joe Public would buy the WinXP version though. Selling WinXP will make it more mainstream, most people wont treat it as a proper laptop without Windows on it.

I think £330 ish is to expensive though.

I am waiting for my 4GB 701 to arrive, £190 new so I'm happy. Already got an 8GB SDHC card and 1GB memory waiting for it.

Yes, thats why i have the 701, much cheaper, and tbh what its used for, you wont really need 20GB, and if you do, SDHC can be used in cameras etc too if you were to get them.

And im not sure by size, its the cost of Linux compared to XP.

Kingston PC5300 is quite cheap right now, Just picked up 1GB and Played £13 delivered, Same place also does 8GB SDHC for £15 delivered, Its only Class 4 but I have one and it's pretty quick (19MB/Sec read)

I got my 4gb 701 second hand at just about half the price quoted of the 900's here. I don't think they are worth paying double. My advice to anyone who is looking at these... wait until more 701 owners go for a 900 and then pick yourself up a bargain 701 4gb at less than half price of a 900!

Yep, i'd wait a while till the price drops.

The 900 is a fair price higher thant he 701, in which its not 100% needed.

i think the 701 4gb will hold their value pretty good for a bit, seeing how the 901 is quite a lot more.

just been playing some Unreal Tournament/Halo and HL1 on the eee, they all play pretty well tbh and haven't tweaked any of them properly either....amazing stuff.

I forget how... so can you remind me how... to play Halo on Eee?

*shakes fist*
Could do with it now actually, ;)

Copy the files from the DVD on to an SDHC card or make an ISO and transfer it onto the SDHC then use Daemon or share your DVD drive over the network or use an external DVD drive. Once you've done that install it like you would any other game (on an EEE running XP)....

I really want an Eee after doing lots of research as i could replace my PPC that i use for work. Heck i could just stick one of these in my bag along with my lunch and not worry about it as there's no moving parts (Hard drives and Optical drives) it would be very rugged.

But i want a propper usable resolution so the 701 doesn't cut it for me and i have my sights set on a 901 with Linux and 20g SSD my only concerns are the resolution 1024x600 (would really like 1024x768 as it's more of a slandered) and obviously price £330 is Laptop territory and there's a heck of allot more goes into a laptop than an Eee so why so expensive?

One other thing i already have a white MacBook so would like a Black 901, are these going to be available in Black?
