***The Official ATI Radeon HD 5850 / 5870 Reviews and Discussion Thread***

Hilarious this price whinging, its only £300, thats an utter bargain, especially when you consider that Nvidia's new cards are always £400/£500+, can guarantee if these were Nvidia cards at £500 a piece there'd be no price whinging, always the same, one rule for Nv.............
I don't think the issue is that AMD are selling a card for £300, but rather that in terms of value for money, the new cards can't live up to the standard set by the 485/4870.

Then you paid double the money for double the performance (going from a 3870 to a 4870); this time around you're paying double the money for ~60% more performance. If the 5870 was over 2 times faster than the 4870, I doubt people would be moaning about the price tag.

As it is, the 5870 seems like it would be better placed at £200.

Hmmm, a fair price maybe but utter bargain is a bit strong.

I'm sticking with my 4890 for the time being and waiting for a while to see how things pan out, drivers, prices, DX11 etc .....

The 4890 does everthing I want atm so don't feel the need to rush out and get a 5890 despite the hype and hysteria on here. Looks to be a damn fine card though, the X2 looks like being totally awesome !

Bring it on !!!!!

I tend to agree - I have a 4850, but I think I'll wait till the 5850 comes down to about 175ish before looking more seriously :)

People get real look what 8800gtx and 280 were going for at launch

Agreed, BFG 8800 GTX OC's were about £535 when they came out, the 280 was more than the 5870, yet the 5870 is still to dear at £300, you gota laugh, i certainly am :D

I'll say it again, when the GT300's come out, watch out for the face changers. :p

Aye it's barmy, at the moment ATi have pretty much no competition with this card or at least very little and ATi still managed to pull a good price for it out the bag. I think that is to be respected tbh.

Yeah I paid about £400+ for a MSI X800 XT Platinum Edition on day of release in 2004.

GTX 295 in January was about £420 I think, it's a good price £300 for a first day release, will come down in price over the next few weeks easily.

And at the end of the day this is the fastest single GPU on the Market to date.

Memory bandwidth seems to be hurting these cards; 153 GB/sec is a pretty poor bump from the last gen, given that they doubled all the other performance parts.

There are GTX 285s on sale with higher RAM bandwidth than that. A 285 would need less, yet has more. That whole "Nvidia = smoother" meme doesn't seem so ridiculous now, does it? Hell, it's mathematically factual.

AMD skimped on a really major component in order to make more money for themselves. I, personally, respect that, though I'm not sure all the romantic imbeciles who've taken to berating Nvidia for their shady doings will feel the same.

The launch has really brought out all the idiots. This thread has been fantastic popcorn material today. :)

People are saying these cards are loud, i hope they arent too loud and a good improvement over what i have now.. judging that 2 8800 GT's seem to be around 4870/4890 i think it should be a good upgrade.

Now i just want to see what nV bring out, anyone think it will be much faster?

Im not paying any attention to people taking hissy fits over the prices or the performance

when my 2x 5870s arrive tomorrow, im going to jizz in my pants.
can i say the same for the wingers ? nope nada :p

There just unhappy people and like to argue over stupid things, seriously would anyone argue if it was nvidias launch today at 400-500 lol

im thrillingly looking forward to sticking these 2 cards in my 4.2HT I7 and kicking some A**

Yep, it's a fair price at launch I reckon.

I think some people are thinking back to the 4870 launch. From memory weren't they around 250 ish and caused a rapid rethink at NV regarding their prices ?

The graphics market was a different situation back then I know but I guess some were hoping for a similar price.

If the 5870 drops 30 quid ish over the next few weeks I'm going to be very tempted though :)
