***The Official ATI Radeon HD 5850 / 5870 Reviews and Discussion Thread***

Been holding out for this but still dont know weather to go for a GTX 295 or one of these 5870's? Seems like 295 still is boss? Am I wrong?

Oh its still the boss but only just. I honestly believe that the 5870 was really made to go against the 285 seeing as thats a single gpu card like the 5870 and it stomps all over that comprehensively and thats with early release drivers which will mature with time and widen the performance gap. The 295 is afterall a twin gpu setup, with all the inherent probs that design entails, heat, power draw, etc and is still more expensive than the 5870 by at least £40-£50 with its performance only just ahead of the 5870. As said, I reckon the 5870X2 (if/when it emerges) will be the card to go against 295 and it should beat that comprehensively.
I'm sure a lot of ppl here are waiting to see what happens when the gtx300 arrives, will it best the 5870 or the 5870X2, how much will it cost, will it be consume more power, how big will it be, who knows, it ain't out yet, and what do ATI have waiting in the wings to counter it, a 5890, 5890X2?
One thing is, Nvidia are going lose a lot revenue between now and the arrival of the GTX300 so its gotta be a blinding performer for obvious reasons.:)

Check out the minimum frame rates in the apples to apples comparison on hardocp.

Tells a very interesting story on the 5870

In 3/4 tests whilst the 5870 easily beats the 285 and 4890 on average frame rates, as you would expect, it absolutely destroys them on the most important minimum frame rate.

Arma II - 5870/285/4890
Average - 33/25/28
Minimum - 20/6/9

Firing squad also reports minimum frame rates, not quite so good for the 5870 as the hardocp review.
Hardware Canucks review highlights the HD5870's superiority over the HD4870 x 2 and GTX295 in minimum frame rates. That's a huge plus in its favour as minimum frame rates are the most important measure of the actual gaming performance you and I will experience.

Well the 5870 doesn't seem to offer enough performance over the 5850 to warrant the 50% price hike but then the 5850 doesn't offer enough performance advantage over my old GTX280 to warrant the hassle of upgrading, especially as new waterblocks will be involved.

Think I'll sit tight and see what NVidia come up with next year. Not like my GTX280 struggles with anything! :)

I have been sleep deprivated all week so i will definatly sleep tonight and wake up to 2x5870s, then the mini orgasm kicks in and i jizz on the spot, then gameing time WOOOOOT :p

Virus u wouldnt happen to be an ex RVS player would u?

one of our monitors at work has one - I had to look on Wikipedia to see what it was - had never seen on before

I had told my colleague it must be a HDMI port - I looked very stupid when it turned out to be something I'd never even heard of before ! lol

Went into a high street chain electronics store yesterday to find a DP -> DVI converter and the shop assistant looked very bemused as he had never heard of it :D

One more point; I'm not sure I agree with anandtech's "always use AA" ethos. To be honest, at 2560*1600 I prefer to play with AA off in FPS games. At this resolution jaggies are virtually invisible anyway, and playing without AA leads to a slightly 'cleaner' and sharper image. I'm sure that for flight sims / racing games good quality AA is essential no matter the resolution, but for FPS I'm not convinced.

should have Gone to specsavers.

AA is always required... ALWAYS. Even if you are sitting quite far back from the screen it will still look quite a bit better with just 2xmsaa

I think the 5850 will be the card to get and in a few weeks they will be £170 ish without doubt the 5870 is a great card but when You look at it's spec I don't think it's delivering to it's full design potential, whereas I just have a feeling it's little brother will end up almost as good.
And for people who want to really fly 2 in crossfire will be unbeatable value/performance
