5870 seems to be on average 2x the performance of my 260 gtx. On beta drivers. Ill take one :D

Seems it will dominate at folding too :o

Quite honestly, after 18 months between the last and this generation it's not really a large enough jump in performance to make us very impressed by the performance for a £300 product. It's looking like ATI have made a GPU to fill the big shoes left by its RV770-based cards, which is no mean feat, and given the quantum leap in performance the HD 4000 series was over the HD 3000, it hasn't achieved it again in raw FPS this time around. That's not to say it's at all slow though: it's still the fastest single GPU product and if you want the fastest, most future proof product available we'd recommend it, however it's not an "I must upgrade now" product. We'd wait that one out.

Im still quite impressed tbh. For a single GPU card to come close the the GTX295 is no mean feat really...
 
from what i see the 5870 is about 10-12 percent faster than a 4890

compare that to price

more than double and its pure comedy .

id get a 4890 or a cheap 4870x2 if can. be found and save a shed load of cash

they should be priced at two hundred tops!

what drivers do i need installed? I currently have a 4870 with win7 and the new 9.9's on. Will those be ok for my 5870?

That's such a good point. I could run two 4890s for the same price. I'd just be missing DX11 (doesn't bother me) and bitstreaming audio (I've already got an HDAV).

It's such a shame that my rig isn't suited to a 2 card set up.
 
Hmm, I wonder if you can turn on the bits that change a 5870 to a 5850 - as TechPowerUp turned them off in the 5870 to emulate the 5850??
 
All that hype for a few cards that only just about win over all. I wont be buying one as I feel nvidia will pull this one back at some point

and the prices are stupid for ATI cards

Work for me now, means I canny order a card which is good news. :D Play nice people.
