The official canon 5d mk4 thread

Much as I see where you are coming from, you are talking about a camera 1 off the flagship, it is never going to be "cheap".

I paid £2.7k for one of my mk2, £2.9k for one of the first mk3, that was when the pound was at least 10% stronger.

You can get a 5dmk2 for £200

Anyone who reckons they don't take good pictures is a 100% grade-A moron.

Great cameras.

7-8 years ago?

I have one sitting in my case as "spare". I can take good pictures with it too, the point and argument isn't whether a older and cheaper camera can take pictures. The gripe that most people have is the initial starting price at launch that is about £500 higher than the last model.

You can see it coming though, new lenses have been about 20% more than the previous model, this is no different. Canon are a business, they have shareholders to answer to and somewhere along the line, between the R&D cost and the accountant working out the best price to get the best return from market sale prediction they come up with a figure.

Jonneymendoza, can you shoot a static, well lit scene with the Mark III and Mark IV (same lens, aperture, iso and position) and post the shots to compare detail of the two sensors please?

ok i will bite, like what? apart from rattle thrown out of pram wanting more for less, as this happens on every new camera release and they still sell by the bucket load.

Dunno.

Maybe because it doesnt have 100mp and shoot 4k in 90fps in a 8gb card containing 1 hour of footage..

Outdated memory card slots.
No 4K HDMI output.
5 times the size for 4K video due to codec.

It's not more for less. The A7R2 have faster cards, native 4K and lower file size for less money.

They should lose the filter on the sensor too.

Umm the a7r2 has outdated card slots too mate. Shocking battery and buffer rate and larger file sizes for stills .

I use and own a a7r2

hi raymond, so that would be more features for less money you want-so more for less.
Back to the hate bit, still don't understand, the same was said about the 5d mk111 when specs first came out, canon are there as a business-its not personal, why would they give people a camera with everything when they sell massive quantity's with just drip feeding tech-that's good business, sell an upgrade every few years and people wanting more rather than no need to upgrade.

It's not more features, I want the same features found on older, cheaper cameras.

I am not even talking about special out of the world features, not talking about new tech that no one else have, not cutting edge tech that found only in the 1D. I am talking about adopting memory card format that is the norm in an older camera, a cheaper camera.

It is a new camera, Mk3 buffer sucks, it is one of it's negative points. New camera ought to address it, it didn't.

The criticism is valid.

I thought this view is quite accurate, on paper. Don't get me wrong, I am still getting 2...but it doesn't mean I think the camera is perfect. It's better than the Mk3, but it could be so much more...so easily.

i do agree those features would be nice, but as you say yourself you will buy anyway, so if canon give you those features on a mkv you will i guess buy that as well-it is good business. they are a company there to sell cameras no other reason

We need to stop making excuses for them and criticise where it is valid, otherwise we will be stuck at these card formats for eons.

Am late to reply, but Canon played it safe with the features that matter and instead chose to waste time and money on a feature (dual pixel AF) which is utterly pointless. This annoys me, I wouldn't have expected such a long standing and experienced company as Canon to trip up in such an embarrassing way.

Three features which weren't too much to ask, but would have made all the difference (Jonneymendoza, I am not asking for anything crazy):

Automatic micro adjustment
Meter from custom focus point
Removal of AA filter

When the life cycle of the product is 4 years and the competition so fierce, Canon really needed a camera which ticks all the boxes and a little more.

I'm not saying the camera won't sell, it will, but it's a disappointing release and totally lacks innovation.

Nikon are rumoured to be announcing the D810 replacement at Photokina soon. Will be very interesting to see how the two compare..

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do the D820 or whatever it will be called. I still think the D810 is an amazing camera and i still has plenty of life in it, a photokina announcement may be a little soon I think but guess we'll find out very soon.
