Andy you have been sold a China version and not the global one, it might run the global rom but it is not the global phone.http://en.miui.com/thread-1827734-1-1.html
Check the code on the bottom of the phone and the box.
 
Yes, my code is MET7 which is apparently the Hong Kong version. I've just scanned through their listing and tbf it only says Global ROM, not the device is the global version. I seem to get 4G being on EE, so I guess I shouldn't really worry about it at the price I paid? (£125 I think)
 
I know it's a minefield, mine is a MEG7 with all the global rom stickers and English instructions, etc. Just so people are aware more than anything.

Do you have a link to the seller?

The global version comes with sealed box and global version sticker on the side of the box.

That it supports OTA and is Global ROM gave it away? The image to the left has it in this order 'Official Global ROM', 'Supports OTA Update'. It's not exactly saying it's not the global phone. The hint being it only says it's the global ROM, not Global Device. Do others specify 'device'? As I say though, I don't see it's an issue? Is there any reason it's a problem?

No, ss I said, it's the Hong Kong version. Chinese version is MEE7, I have MET7.

I have the Redmi 5 Plus 4/64GB global version and the model number is MEG7.

MET7 is the Chinese version and the listing description gives it away by "We have unlocked the bootloader and installed global ROM".
 
It is not a criticism Andy, I was just pointing out the difference in case anyone else was looking to buy one, the hardware is the same just different bands for different countries.
 
Yeah, I was more wanting to check my own understanding. Someone buying should know and go for the 'proper' Global version, but at the same time (so I know when I sell it on) it doesn't look like I'm any worse off on EE.

Initial impressions are very good. Generally seems quick and smooth, screen seems good, camera is reasonable and speaker is acceptable (I listen to podcasts and actually make most calls using loud speaker).
