***The Official Core i3 Overclocking Thread***

Running a single Sapphire HD5770 Vapor-X in mine, and it is excellent. :)

Only 'problem' i've got atm is that even though i'm running a dedicated GPU the board is still allocating 128MB to the IGP...

So my System Memory says:

4.0GB Installed (3.87GB Available)

Which is a little annoying. I've asked Gigabyte about it and am now awaiting their response.

What size monitor are you using?

4Ghz, will be easy on air.


As said when in Crossfire the cards will only run at x4 speed in that motherboard. You would have to look at a P55 board if you want faster speeds. The x4 will hinder the performance of the cards more than them being at just x8.

If you are going for two x 5770s then surely you can afford a lil' bit extra for a single 5850...? :confused:

yes... or even better, a 5850 if you can afford it. id wait for the 5850 to hit $200 though, at least i am.

xfire and SLI arent all its cracked up to be anyway. uses a ton of power, microstuddering in games and other general headaches really make it unappealing to me.

i think the gtx260 is great, but the 5850 is where its at.

Made the order with the 5770 but I can call and change it (ocuk dispatches being slow atm) if you guys think it really is the best option. The monitor is res 1920x1080 too.
 
well its up to you if the difference is worth it, especially because i dont know what they cost over there. the 5850 here still costs over $250 and that is too much imo. we have limited supply though, maybe the grass is greener over there. i do know that the 5850 will be well in the standard for all games that will be released from now until at least windows 8 comes out, so if you do change your order to the 5850 it should be the last card you need for a long time. 3+ years most likely.
 
Using the 5770 on 1920x1080 myself and it handles itself fine taking it costs half the price of a 5850.

If you got the cash to spare and don't mind paying double the price then sure go for the 5850, if not the 5770 would serve you well.
 
530 vs 540

I'm just curious why everyone selected the i3 530. Has anyone overclocked the i3 540, the extra multiplier helps I would assume.

I guess if the 530 clocks to 4ghz what's the point of spending more to go over 4GHz for only marginaly better gains. However, it would help keep the FSB lower which would help stability. I'm buying aN i3 system soon so anyone with advice I would greatly appreciate it.

at the start of the production they want to pump the best models out (eg, q9550s from recent(late) manufacture have higher VIDs) so at the moment the two(i3 530 and 540) are both made with the highest regard to quality, so now the two become the same in all regards but cache(different? too lazy to check) and multiplier. So if motherboards, temps or voltages don't become the wall then the 540 will overclock more just due to the multiplier.

Maby in a year the 530s on sale will have slightly higher VIDs and maby failure dates but I don't have any grounds to say that it's merely speculation (like the rest of my post).
 
you know, i think i either hurt my 8800gt or my power supply... or mainboard... because im getting video adapter resets constantly and all really intensive games are going nuts. its clearly a hardware problem.

i wonder if its because i tried starting up this pc without the power cable plugged into the video card. it made a horrific squeal when i did that... honestly though, this 8800gt has never been pushed hard by the e5200, and its likely that my 430w earthwatts power supply isnt strong enough for an overclocked i3 system with this 8800gt g92. 430w is nearly what these parts can realistically draw, and i wouldnt doubt if the power supply just cant do it.

i bought a corsair 650w supply for $80 shipped overnight after MIRebate. i dont like rebates, but i was going to buy this ps anyway.

If I can make a request to either you or Azza, if either of you can produce an 8-hour Prime-Blend at a given overclock I would appreciate it very much, curious to know more about the IMC quality . . . . in your own good time of course, thanks! :cool:

this board seems nice. maybe its the british thing. americans are ********, thats a fact, and its just not necessary on computer hobby forums. i like to have fun and learn right things
