***The Official E2140/E2160 Overclocking Thread***

Well i have tried everything that pops into my head.

Anyone have any ideas?
I've read people have tried the BSEL mod with E21xx CPUs and it made no difference to the suspected FSB wall. I say suspected as some believe CPUs (particularly E21xx/E4xxx) have FSB walls whereas other say it's down to the motherboard chipset. The BSEL mod kinda rules out the motherboard chipset but people still say it's not CPU replated so it's a bit of a mystery. :)

As for your 370 FSB wall does it boot higher than that with a lower multiplier? I found the same issue with my E2160 at around 376 FSB and it wouldn't boot even with a lower multiplier. I couldn't think of anything else to try either.

My sorry excuse for an e2180 just to show they aren't all monster overclockers. Thats with 1.475v set in the bios, it only makes it to 2.7 on stock volts. Temps are a little high I know but they should be acceptable shouldnt they? and the voltage isnt too extreme is it, as long as the temps are ok?

my e2180 overclock and a couple of questions.

should i worry about those flames?
what is the AUX temp on speedfan?
why is my voltage not being shown the same as the one i set in bios?

1) No they are just the temperature icons
2) strange one, too high to be a system temp, might be a thermister under the chip but even then it seems to close to your core temp
3) vdrop/vdroop, vdrop is where the board just supplies less voltage than you tell it to. vdroop is where the voltage its supplying drops even further when the cpu is under load, its perfectly normal, some boards get it worse than others.

Looks like you got a much better chip than me

it failed not long after that screen shot. I'd set the voltage at the max recommended by intel - 1.312V, didn't really want to go higher for now. I've gone back to 3.0ghz and dropped the voltage back down a bit.

I'm not really bothered about pushing it to it's limits. i'm quite happy with a 50% increase.

it's a lot better than the A64 4000+ I used to have!

PS. if intel say max voltage 1.312 (i know you can go above this), is that 1.312 set in bios, or 1.312 after vdrop/vdroop? i.e the reading on cpuz.

WILD9, I think you've got your vcore too high - in the 1.40v's?

I have my E2180 at 3.2Ghz on 1.35v (could probably go lower), idling at 34 degrees and 47 degrees in game etc. Orthos at load gets to 50 degrees.

Yeah im starting to think your right, im just really dissapointed im not going to hit 3 gig with this chip :(

edit: after turning pwm fan control off my temps are down to 50c load with an ac7 pro at 1.475v. Ive downclocked to 2700 for now as thats the best i can get on 1.35v (42c load), I know overclocking is always a gamble but this e2xxx seems to be just about the worst overclocker ive seen anywhere, do I get a prize?

Nope it dosent boot with a lower Multi either.

Im so depressed people :(, was hoping for at least 3GHz.

Was it an L2 stepping E2140 (default 1.325v)? I had one recently and it wouldn't even do 2.66GHz without a voltage bump and wouldn't get near 3GHz.

Just ordered a

EVGA 650i Mobo
E2160
2gb 800mhz GeiL Ram

Would you say 3ghz would be an *easy* clock?

will be my first O/C btw :)

depends on your cooling and wether or not your chip needs a lot of vcore but i had the same set up and ran an easy 3+GHz 24/7 using a Thermalright ultra 120. and my chips a bit vcore hungry.

anyway if it helps you any i ran the following BIOS settings for 3160 ( iirc )

FSB - Memory clock mode [ linked ]
FSB - Memory ratio [ sync mode ]
FSB (QDR), MHz [ 1344 ]
Memory timing setting [ ENTER > optimal ]

System Voltages:
CPU core [ 1.45000 ]
CPU FSB [ 1.30V ]
Memory [ 2.10V ]
nForce SPP [ 1.30V ]

sweet

Great! Its arriving on monday
Ill only have stock cooler for awhile (no money for after market HS), ordering one asap... once i no room in my case

Is there anything i should turn off for maximum clocks?

I just started overclocking on my new build and got 9 x 333 very easily and stable with my E2160 on a P35C DS3R, using a Freezer Pro 7, but I'm getting conflicting reports, with the cpu temp under 30, going up to the late 40's after an hour of Orthos.

The EasyTune5 Pro, that came with the mobo, states 9 x 333, with 1.412v.

But CPU-Z states 6 x 333 with 1.392v, although this does flicker to 9 x 333 now and then, but only for a second or so.

Turn Speed step off in the bios:)

Personally id leave it enabled, and just make a mental note that it will look slower when not under load, it makes the transformation from idle to load in miliseconds anyway.

I have a Freezer pro 7 and a 2160 and idles with TAT at 39c and loaded by TAT goes upto 57c...?

Do i need to reseat the cooler or can it be this different between boards?

Mike

Oki Build Complete

First Build and first O/C

2.81ghz

Core temps around 26c idle - 55c under load.. stock cooler .... these with everest and speedfan

running orthos small fft's now

should i run blend? aswell as small fft's

Try Tat or Coretemp as Im sure everest and Speedfan need +15 deg adding to be accurate.

That makes you at 70Deg full load
