*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I've had this game since launch, including the lifetime expansion pass.
I gave it a little go when I bought it, but found flying very tricky (I have a thrustmaster hotas x) as have no real flight sim experience. Controls are very twitchy/sensitive to me.
I would really like to get into it, so can someone give me the best place to go for a noobs starting guide and a few initial goals that will help me get a foot in the door.
Some decent tips on setting up controller would be great too,

It really does look wonderful and I know I'll enjoy it if i can just get up the steep learning curve a bit ( I don't mind a bit of grinding if the scenery's nice )

Going to start have a play with this again after an extended break, I've got Horizons but not really played since release. What is currently the go to ship for long range exploration?

You should be able to adjust the sensitivity settings, either in-game or in the config software for the HOTAS.

There are training exercises and videos linked from the main menu, which would be the best place to start.
There are a couple of articles on the FD forums worth reading, as well as plenty of YouTube guides.

Most controllers have a profile already built in, but mainly it's down to your own preferences.
You'll want to assign anything you need immediately to the HOTAS (flight controls, weapons, targetting, etc) and the rest can be put wherever you like on the keyboard, such as landing gear, lights, etc.
Remember, you can set up one or more buttons as a modifier, so a 4-way hat gets another 4 controls for each modifier you set.

Anything with Explorer in the title is a good start - Asp and Diamondback, for example. Upgrading things like the power plant and FSD drive will beef up your jump range.
The Diamondback is cheaper (mine has over 30Ly already), but carries less weaponry and has fewer internal slots.

I logged in last night for the first time in ages and found my Combat rating had been changed to 1% at a much lower rating (can't remember which). Is this a bug or a deliberate FD ploy to "motivate" players to dabble in gameplay they don't necessarily enjoy?

in the current 2.2 version of the game for exploration and general use I personally stick with an ASP Explorer.

in the new 2.3 version of the game it looks like the Dolphin, Orca and the Diamond Back could take its crown.

Bug, the only way your combat rank will go down is if you request it specifically.

Thanks :) I didn't realise there were built in guides!

I'm not the greatest player but I'm always happy to try to help out if I can. I'm Justinian Octavius in game so feel free to send me a friend request if you want.

Yeah, contact Frontier Support & they should fix it.

That moment when you have 1mil in bounties for a CG and dont let a scan finish before firing and get wiped out in 10 seconds..... FAK
I'd rather that than the moment you get interdicted by an Elite Anaconda with 2 Elite FDLs in wing, slaying your 55mil freighter in 4 seconds flat and losing you the 520-odd ton of cargo that, because you weren't paying attention, you spent all your remaining cash on filling your hold with... only to then find that your insurance doesn't cover the rebuy and you have to start over from scratch, with your only option being missions for less than 10k at a time!!!!! :(

Been a reasonable week here.
Have been improving my reputation in Shinrarta, and am now very close to being allied for all local powers. Also fully equipped and engineered a Vulture (nice and cheap, so no worries about costs from losses), and bought a Fed Gunship.

On the powers, I have a plan. I've seen long distance sightseeing tours (i.e. 20k LY) with values upto 80 million credits. What I'm aiming for is to:
- Ensure a ship is suitable for a real long distance run. Guessing I'll us my Conda
- Wait and stack 3 missions to hopefully the same target location (or at least vicinity), with a goal of trying to setup a 200 million credit run
Nearly there...

Finished the CG in top 10 for both, 6K of reactive amour delivered and 18M in credits for them bounty hunt. (Thanks system authority) was insane how many ships they had, just lurk and let them do their job. Last hour or so I did 2.7 million mostly FDL,FDS and Anaconda's. With CG rewards and trucking missions I have done roughly 100 million this week.

Having my Rank reset has made the game fun again, still meeting the odd deadly and Elite ships but is more balanced and repair costs much less... Module storage is excellent. Based in Carlisle station, had the fit out for the cargo and the bounty hunting for my Python. Just needed to swap them round.

Loving the game once again.

I would consider waiting for 2.3 and getting an engineered Orca - 60LY+ jump range :)

Conda is a good multi-role ship but not ideal long range passenger ship.

I'm not part of beta testing, but did notice some comments about the Orca. Think I'll be adding one to my fleet very shortly. Not even that expensive.
