*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Tbh I decided not to go as I figured I'd never be able to dock b/c of the beluga whale spawning in landing bays problem & after I read the events blog post I figured it just wasn't worth it me for me to trail all the way up there. I have read the that message Salome et al were delivering, & although interesting background it really isn't something that hits home especially because the plot strands were fed out over GalNet so intermittently & I doubt most players even noticed them.

In other news, some USS distress calls now involve Thargoids; http://xboxdvr.com/gamer/newzim/video/30310968

Elite community goals = How much can make the player base grind.

Then in the FD Dev office sweepstake the winner gets a bonus from everyone else.

Dear all,

Sorry if this has been discussed before.
I have been playing Elite from the very beginning with certain long or short period brakes. In general I enjoy the game a lot, but I feel that Star Citizen will be a vastly superior game, with better graphics and mainly many more things to do. At its current state, I I think Elite has not touched even 50% of its potential, lacking variety in ground missions, ground vehicles and ground equipment and also lacking ship equipment. I don't understand why weapons should be restrained to about 10 types with various grades (A, B, C etc) instead of having tens of different types with different brand names giving more realism and more perceived depth. Regarding the ship customization, I would make it more flexible, maybe by decreasing the core modules and increasing the optional and also removing some of the restraints eg in jump range. For example, every ship should be able to have a long jump range by sacrificing something else, similar to car customization where you can do everything you want as long as you have money.

Do you know what future developments are there for Elite?

Just grinding the final Marquis rank to get my Cutter and I have noticed some changes to NPC behaviour, they seem to be a lot more aggressive. For the first time I have been attacked on the pad, while landing, sitting in the no fire zone. The NPC interdiction mini game seems a little harder and if they do pull you out they have more fire power. Normally fly without shields on my Python but had to slap some on.

Anyone else noticed this?

And it should do with the budget is has but it isn't a playable game atm and won't be ready for maybe years. ED's approach may not be a big bang, here's all the stuff, now play it, but it is a playable game and progressing with new features being added.

Agreed, eg Powerplay is wasted. It could be used to fill the 'story gap' whilst FDev work on and roll out the main Thargoid plot etc.

Tbf they have added Passenger missions, branching missions etc & there is quite the variety imho.

ship equipment. I don't understand why weapons should be restrained to about 10 types with various grades (A, B, C etc)
I am fine with this. Engineer experimental effects is what there should be more off imho.

You can do this. My Cutter has a jump range of 27ly by modding my FSD, replacing my Powerplant with a 5A etc. I don't see this as a problem.

Unfortunately FDev tend to be pretty secretive, which you can understand as some fans go off their rocker if something is 'promised' but then has to be cancelled. There is a rough road map of 'stuff' like atmospheric landings, space legs etc. In this video from 2012 Braben outlines the Development Plan & approach. Notice he mentions ship interiors, which we have just got the bridge of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM0Gcl7iUM8&t=35

They scale with your own 'ability.' So depending upon your ship, your combat rating, the NPC's will get tougher - I believe!

What am I missing here then? I have upgraded my Gunship Assault drive to 5A but its jump range still remains very very limited compared to my ASP Explorer...

Well That was a complete waste of time.

Fly out to follow a tip. Find downed spacecraft, unlock data core using given encryption, " Ship data core already accessed"

*mutter grumble stupid tips...*

I'd saved around ten of those for when I was eventually geared enough to fight things.
The alien ruins patch removed not only the alien ruins quest, but also all of my saved tips & everything else
Still salty about that.

Horizons & thus access to Engineers perhaps? If you do have Horizons unlock Elvira Martuuk, get yourself down to Khun & Long Sight Base & have her mod your FSD. If you want I am happy to provide you with a load of Soontill Relics, 3 of you have to give to her whilst the rest you can just flog.

Personally I think passenger missions are again sham content, all it does is make a certain type of ship semi viable and your effectively taking people instead of fish to point a to b.

Jump range is also issue, everything needs to be tripped from the baseline.

FD have no idea where to take the game, and yes star citizen will make elite redundant. A shame really but FD only have themselves to blame with very poor add on content over the past couple of years.

FD are doing just fine. The game is progressing along nicely. Yep there are some things they defo need to address game play wise but it is, never was or never will be Star Citizen. So the comparasen is moot. However it is a released game.

I've just started playing ED again after a long break (not got the Horizons add-on, just the base game)

I've currently got a Cobra Mk III and about 3m CR in the bank - trouble is previously I was set up for trading rare commodities before so my storage space was maxed out and I didn't even have a shield generator!

Can anyone point me towards some sort of guide to trick my Cobra out for a bit of bounty hunting?

Let me know when SC moves away from its 24fps servers and il be interested. They both have massive flaws but as an investor of both ED is the more playable currently but neither are in good states at all.

So its been a shot storm then, someone who is a known troll added by Salome who then does a double and kills her, no shocks there then...
ED wont live this one down for a while...
I rarely play in Open, partly because of slow internet issues and partly because people suck, so I had to read up on who these SDC guys are.

So far, while their "manifesto" reads well enough about bringing conflict and challenge to the game within an acceptable roleplay context, it seems they mostly spend their time 4-1 ganking newbie Sidewinder pilots in starting systems and trying to hack Mobius. Lots of mentions on how it's done in EVE, using alt accounts and so on, which doesn't really lend itself to sportsmanship, IMO. They have some fair points around justifying the principles of what they do, but their execution of it probably does more to dissuade players than encourage them.

So with all this in mind, I don't get how players trusted SDC in the first place... or even fell for the ridiculous idea that you'd ever use an unarmed Eagle for a job like this!
I'd certainly hope that any officially arranged FD event would turn out better than this.

It will be a vastly different game... Not sure it will be better.
Much of SC looks like it will be a CoD style bunny-hopping, twitch-shooting thing with people jerking all over the place and exploiting bugs, based on what I've seen so far. Nothing breaks immersion more, for me, than seeing the most unrealistic behaviour from peoples' avatars, which hasn't changed since Goldeneye on the N64. The physics limitations of spaceships in Elite and SC help keep it real, but on the ground SC behaves as bad as it looks good.
