Random stupid question, what is contract rank (as a n00b mine is currently aimless)? Is that something generic that levels as I do missions, or do I need to do a certain type? I wanted to try passenger missions by I need scout.

Yes, Combat, Exploration and Trading each rank up as you do more. You'll also rank up as you naturally explore, trade and fight, as well, with all the random encounters and general doing of things and stuff.

Sometimes it will still let you accept a mission that advises you need a higher rank, but on your own head be it if you take an Elite mission at Mostly Harmless rank...

Le sigh.

First time played in seven weeks, spawned near a barnacle planet, so nipped down to see if I'd get my (long overdue) first visitation. (bad enough that my marker had vanished so I had to find it all over again...
Couple of hours later of listening to LTT podcasts & still sod all :(

Guess I'll potter off to one of the Thargoid sites & see if anything happens there. At least already got Probe & other thingie, but if Thargoid appears whilst I'm inside the thing, this'll mean war! :p

EDIT: Welp, went to Thargoid site, got into main room & was trying to activate the device, when the games infamous alt tab bug struck again, so had to shut down the game externally, losing the UA

Second attempt, got both items in the inside area & damn link thing wasn't spawning

Is it ok to use an anaconda for the Quince passenger missions? Is it better to use a Beligna or whatever its called?
Im coming back to the game after a good 18 months so little bit of info on this is much appreciated.

Doesn't really matter, all about jump-range.

Currently in Quince Empire grinding as i had enough of sticking pins in my eyes and watching the Goldbergs.

Hope everyone is looking forward to 2.4 for .....

wait for it

Even more grinding.

Massacre missions in conflict zones are my new go to at the minute.
I am trying to up my combat rank while amassing a small fortune :)
Often having missions worth between 6 and 13 million, can stack usually up to 4 without board hoping.
Usually need to kill about 70 ships, have to be very mindful of the radar and how many friendlies are around so i dont get swamped with red targets all kicking my ass at the same time.

I thought the more passengers the better hence passenger ship? How are you grinding for empire rank, id like to know as i want to do that myself?
Thanks SPG.

Go to quince

Take every empire mission that comes up and just grind away, I like quince as its quick to the surface scan point and you get combat missions as well when you get bored.

Its not about the money, but the grind for rankings is just plain old crap game design. Was shockingly bad for the Federation when i did it the hard way :)

So do you do surface scans or passenger missions as there seems to be debate that you can make money doing both?
Also do you go to Millerport or Jeffries High Spacestation, which is best?
Thanks again man!

millerport, takes surface scans, takes about 15mins maybe and possible 5million each trip, but only from empire.

You can also take some combat missions as its nice for rank and rating

Then stop playing...!!

I do often,

Grind is not gameplay in any game, sure a a couple of missions back and forth is fine for progression, but the amount of back and forth in ED is staggering.

I run around in Engineered COBRA and that is just for posterity the 2billion asset fleet and the same in CASH is a nice cushion and allows me to complain about the games downfalls.

:)

No idea why i am even bothering to get the last rank for empire either :)

Oh and do not get me started on exploring (DULL) and why mining should be the income generator not trading/shooting/CGs/BGS/Haz etc.

Thanks SPG, why are so many passenger missions 1000's of LY away?? How are people getting these so close to each other.
Also i got my ass handed to me, i went into a conflict zone after 18 months of not playing in a fully A rated Anaconda. 18 months ago it was easy but know it seems the AI is different and so are the way the weapons work....wtf has happenend? I got owned by a single viper, also the shield boosters work differently. a lot has changed since i last played from what i can see.....

Genuine comment here:

I thought grinding was one of the "fundamental" premises in MMO type games (e.g. MMORPGs etc)?

I personally never saw the fascination with grinding in those types of games, but on occasion I did get hooked for little while (e.g. SWTOR and Warcraft back in the day).

Then why do you bother coming back when you know what the game is like?
Whining on here isn't going to change it.

It's only grind if you make it so.
The game is about flying missions, exploring, hunting bad guys, running trade and all that. The progress to Elite is, and has always been, something that is supposed to take a long long time. Same for any other achievement, including ones you set yourself.

You instead are seemingly fixated on achieving everything within five minutes... which ain't ever gonna happen, here.

Oh and do not get me started on exploring (DULL) and why mining should be the income generator not trading/shooting/CGs/BGS/Haz etc.
Exploring is dull until you find something, even in real life. You think God put lots of little islands around like random encounters, so that the sailors of yesteryear had something to keep them interested during the weeks and months at sea while they explored the globe?

Mining... The average real life miner earns less than me right now. Savvy traders, mercenaries, bounty hunters, etc all earn much more than me.
Pretty realistic for a game, far as I can see...

it was certainly "grind" to get to Elite on the original BBC Micro verion, but that made it all the sweeter when you got that "right on commander!" and looked at your status and saw --- E L I T E ---
was even sweeter getting the little metal badge of the logo when you mailed off to confirm your rank. i still have mine :-)
