*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

It's a space game you can mine, trade, explore and fight in. Dog fighting is very much in it but having never played Eve Valkyrie I've no idea how it compares, I'd recommend that you watch some youtube vids and see if you like it. That said it's only £23 quid for the full version at the moment which is a great deal so just go buy it and see for yourself :)

Trying to decide if I should stay and work on my Federation rank while working towards Elite in combat or if I should move into the Empire and get the rank required for a Cutter for the giggles.

I've got rank for both, but never actually bought the Cutter, I might give it a shot but for now I have stored all of my engineered modules and sold the Corvette and have an ASPExp again, might A rate, and then engineer it, or D rate and engineer, get as much speed/range out of it as I can, I half got there last time, no weapons, just enough speed and shields to get out of dodge when needed...

Can some one explain this game to me? I'd love a space game does it have dog fighting like eve valkryie or is it more serious sim type?

Depends what you want from a game tbh, there is a lot of grind, like, a hell of a lot, and that's all you ever have to do, but that's how Elite has always been and kinda to a point how real life is, want a new car, grind, new house, grind, a lot of people moan about how its all grind and theres no "end point"...

It is a game.... Its is not real life.... games are for enjoyment when you have nothing else to do that is important.

Elite is grind, Sure progress is fine till you get the COBRA after that it becomes Grind incarnate with extra grind.

Sure you can do most things in a COBRA with huge restrictions.

But yes, it is worth playing, is it worth constantly playing .... Hell NO. Play for a month leave alone for a year type of game, quite sad really and poor development.

Meh, it's only a grind if you let it be, that's purely down to your play mentality.

Agreed. I haven't found any of it grindy as I didn't want to 'complete' the game within an hour of buying it by doing nought. I've also largely only done the mission types I wanted to & there is certainly no grind in wings or multicrew imho… just some great fun with other players.

It has dog fighting, yes, but not like EVE... in so far as I played EVE, anyway.

EVE seems mostly about clicking on a target and then watching from 3rd person as the battle plays out like an RTS.
Elite is 1st person in-cockpit combat with you directly controlling every movement and action. It has enough physics to make it a space sim, but enough shooty lasers and gameplay to make it more fun than 100% realistic - By contrast, I understand Rogue System is (or can be set to) realistic spaceflight in painstakingly accurate detail, to the point where it can take 45 minutes just to initialise systems and start your spaceship up!!

So yeah, bit of both, really.

Eve valkyrie is a completely different game to Eve online and does not share any similarities from a control point of view as far as I am aware.

Ah, yes, sorry I missed the Valkyrie bit.
Have played that a couple of times too - Graphically very pretty, at least on the Vive... but I still prefer Elite.

Came back to ED after about 4 months off. Not really sure what I was up to before the break and couldn't decide what to do so sold off a few ships, bought an Orca and signed up for the DSN Luxury Tour over on EDSM.
Not sure how long it will take me to catch up with the crowd, or if I'll even catch up at all before they hit the last way point but hey ho, it's something a bit different to what I've done in game before.
On my way to waypoint 1 right now...

Not tried this (not played in ages) but if you need some money.

Well, if you are willing to stare at empty space go passed for 45mins then you probably deserve the 200m. Board hopping drives me nuts, having to log in & out b/c an NPC Beluga has wedge me Cutter in the letterbox again is enough for me. I can make 10m in 15 minutes from passengers without board hopping etc if I want & that'll do for me.

Ive given up hope on this game now, basic core game play updates have taken far too long to implement and were looking at another year for this to get some finished tlc.

Ive tried to change my approach to the game but its always the same, 2.4 imo has been a complete load of rubbish and the commander chronicle they did for it looked far better than the actual gameplay.

Having to drop into signal sources to interact with the same scripted event each time is to me so backwards its unreal.

Ive never been hyper-dicted never seen them at barnacle sites etc the game lacks depth still 3 years on and needs a different dev team.

In Q1 2018 engineers, Galnet, the police, trade & wings are getting updated plus the new planetary rendering system is being deployed. That's a solid start imho & sure it's far from everything everyone wants but ED isn't FDev's only product & the company has to stay in business.

2.4 isn't finished yet.

I have been hyperdicted repeatedly & imho the game has lots of depth… unfortunately FDev are extremely bad, chronically so, at using the game to communicate it.

How many hours played?

ive played over 6 weeks in total roughly over the last 3 years.

2.4 isnt finished its just so drip fed and slow. For me so far it lacks.

Im aware there is promised stuff coming next year, but this has been the same model over an over and they have released stuff that hasnt been well received (power play, engineers, multi crew).

there is a thread on the forums where people have said if it wasnt for youtube they would not even know thargoids exist. It seems to me its a game you play via youtube and web sites.

So a game that you have played for over a 1000 hours needs a new dev team? okay...

As for 2.4, you can't like everything all of the time and you can't please everybody all of the time, it's not the end of the world.

Hasn't been well received? Assume you're basing that on forum feedback which is always negatively loaded, if you have other proof I'm willing to listen.

As for if it wasn't for youtube people wouldn't have known about the Thargoids, what a load of bull, it's been on the launcher and all over galnet, if people don't make the slightest effort to read in game and launcher news articles they have no right to say the information isn't there.

I put a lot of hours in early on and there was nothing else about like it, i was an original Alpha backer as im sure others have been . I had hoped the direction of the game would be more fleshed out than it currently is and it seems to have taken a long time to get it to this stage.

Even Braben admitted its taken longer to get the game where it is today than was originally expected. I believe for the game to only now heading towards year 4 be getting core game play features implemented that were half done originally is at best slow. The changes they are bringing may or may not improve on whats already there, only time will tell.
The Thargoids may be advertised now on the launcher etc but im afraid what i said was not `Bull` Initially when the Barnacles were first seen in game if you had not read or seen a video about them or there location then you would not have known they existed or where they were, with the amount of planets to roam around looking for un seen content like the Barnacles is very unlikely.
As for the Thargoid ships initially there were reports of first sightings etc but where? on news articles via game reviews with Braben and his team, or via the Xbox video (youtube) of the hyperdiction. As i said if you played the game for what is shows you then you would have been unaware they even existed. I and quite a few people i know and on the forums have never been hyperdicted, never seen a thargoid over a Barnacle site etc. My first encounter was when i went to the nebulae and dropped into there signal source where there is a scripted event, not quite what i expected or how i imagined them to be.
Surely they would be free roaming where ever they wanted to be and not just in these drop in instances.

I may have played a long time in the early stages but its dropped off significantly over the past 3 years, the game had so much scope and direction it could have gone in and it seems they have put in road blocks to elongate the game play and what you may or may not want to achieve/enjoy.

I hope in time the game evolves and becomes more balanced and enjoyable, until then i will wait and keep watching bits via youtube etc.

Still not seeing how that equates to needing a new dev team and I stand by my bull comment, the information was and is in game should you care to read it, just because youtube had stuff within minutes rather than a few days is being entirely unreasonable in my opinion. It obviously had some sort of appeal otherwise you would never have played it for so much time. Sounds to me like you're just bitter because things aren't happening fast enough for you and not going in a direction specific to your wants, welcome to game development.
