Why not?

Whats wrong with space legs? Just flying around gets boring fast.

And that is the point.

Rather than flying around getting board fast, why not put the effort in and create a universe with more substance to it.
I know I will get bored very fast pew pewing on the surface with limited activities.
Horses for courses but I would have rather they developed more to do in the universe.

read what i said,..

what FPS game lets you roam around a whole planet nevermind a universe/star system?

This is in reply to someone moaning that there is too many fps games. No there is no FPS game of this scale around besides star citizen.
Read what I said...
Seen one planet in elite you've seen them all, seen one square km of planet surface in elite, you've seen it all. Scale without content and variety means nothing.

My "moaning" was responding to your "moaning" that the space flying around is boring...... My point is if they fleshed out the space part like in the DDF maybe you wouldn't find it so boring. I have no issue with new features so long as they are properly meshed into the game but not if it is at the expense of leaving other features half finished and a shadow of what they could be.

Btw.if number of planets is what makes s good game then NMS hammers both ED and SC

I dont think they can...either the engine just won't allow it (given the instance nature of everything) or they just can't dump resources into a game that they won't be able to recoup the costs of.

Its probably a bit of both but if we were to ever see elite 2 you would hope theyv learnt some big lessons from their current work.

Sorry, what's DDF?

I actually prefer star citizen by the way despite being an alpha

Design Decision forum. It was a place where FD outlined their plans for every feature in the game.

I want the game in that forum. Obviously sometimes features get cut , it is the way of it but there was so much gold in those forums. I can't link you to them (however if I did it would probably just frustrate you like it did me) but in a forum migration 18 months or so ago the DDF was locked to all but the DDF Kickstarter backers.

But example.
Ship's wingmates. Pilots which could be hired to help carry out difficult missions

Or the mission board may have missions to join a wing of pilots for escort or protection (or attack or invade)

each pilot with a personality. Hire clean ones and do illeagal activity they may quit or turn on you

Hire pirates and they may cost less but they may try and rob you

Instead we get 1 SLF pilot who sucks all our money and are disembodied from our ship
_--

Ship's crew.
Ship's larger than a cobra need crew.
Crew have their own elite ratings for Thier skills.
Engineer, science officer,. Combat pilot, ships gunner, military grunt, commerce expert, or droid.

Crew need salaries and have synergies. Moral etc
They can be hired or awarded in missions or even come with their own backstories which may have missions tied to them
You can train them, they can die , they can quit and they can rebel.

Droids don't need a salary bit can malfunction if not maintained.

Instead we got SLF pilot and multiplayer crew.

The DDF went into more detail and that is just 2 examples of the dozens of topics in therem

It's not surprising given the graphical improvements but frontier have increased Elite's system requirements for Odyssey by a noticeable amount.

Hopefully doesn't prevent folk from being able to play it. I'll see how the beta runs but I worry my geforce 970 (which is fine at the moment) might struggle to run it at the native 1440p of my monitor without dropping down from high quality.

I'd intended upgrading to one of the new geforce RTX 3060 cards but the way supply is I'm not sure if it'll be possible this year!

60GB available space

Minimum (Low Settings at 720p)

Running an FPS shooter style environment at higher level of fidelity and detail takes a lot more PC horsepower than a space sim with some white stars painted on a black skybox. Some people go on about how awesome Elite Ponderous looks, but the reality is it is actualy very basic in the graphical department. Don't get me wrong, it can look good, it was just never ever close to pushing the limits of GPU technology.

I agree with bigmike, what they promised to us early beta backers/kickstarters and what they delivered were worlds apart (pun intended).

Not to forget that there is a lot of optimisation work to be done between now and release so it would not surprise me to see the requirements drop later on.

The game is designed to run on the potato also known as the xbox1 so it's not going to take too much to make the game.playable on PC.
That said..... Imo a gtx 970 is around 7 years old now. Imo having to run at fairly low details or a cut down resolution on such hardware is acceptable imo. I would hate.for FD to not implement (optionally disableable) new shiny features because hardware from even 5 years ago can't run it
Its bad enough that the new and improved lighting system for EDO still can't cast more than one light source and planet rings etc iirc.wont cast a proper shadow.

ED could be such a showcase for ray tracing as well but no dice there either.

I agree. I'm only concerned as many, like myself, are going to struggle to upgrade their current video cards right now and for the foreseeable future due to supply issues. I'd happily buy a new GPU since as you say my current one is over 6 years old so it's definitely overdue

Yeah, it's a shame they haven't managed to implement Ray tracing as elite seems like the kind of title that would really benefit from it. Maybe a limitation of the game engine?

RT would be a nightmare TBH. Seeing how it has been deployed so far, I would hate to think of the time and effort needed to implement it for a limited audience. I am sure RT will one day be a standard option, however, it has a massive overhead when enabled for little benefit in my view. RT looks great but I would rather have frame rate stability over Pretty shadows.
Just my opinion of course.

In the past frontier was the company who implemented features which ran really poorly but with a view to them paying dividends in the future..It is one reason why roller coaster Tycoon 3 looks so good even today.
Sadly that kind of forward thinking seems to be gone now. I have an rtx 3090 but even if it was not really playable even on my gpu I would still love them to inplement Ray tracing
1) it would be a free upgrade for when the 4080 drops and 2) EDnhas always been about spare pr0n and amazing shots at such high Res you would not play the game (it will do 16k screenshots iirc). Imo ray tracing still screenshots would sell copies. Also I am no expert but I am told turning on ray tracing is generally not difficult. But like I said I am no expert.

I am not going to bother with the alpha just yet. maybe when it is in the last phase I will give it a go. From what I have seen the NPCs dont stand on chairs with their arms stretched out :)
