*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Are you using a Meta Quest headset? I discovered the best performance with my MQ3 was via airlink and then launching ED direct from that instead of SteamVR (or Steam link). You can also tweak some stuff in the Oculus Diagnostic Tool to increase encoding which I think means it reduces the fresnel effect with the pancake lenses. I also used an ED profiler thing which changes the colour scheme which helps greatly with readability of text.

Yeah 3. I can't remember what I tried wireless but it just was terrible so I put up with a cable for now until I can be bothered to try it again without, plus it has the added bonus of keeping itself charged I guess whilst I plug it in.
I don't know what the Fresno effect is but I've tweaked most of the settings to go as high as they can, like 750 encode rate etc.

Bought myself two Thrustmaster T16000's for Christmas, so I've been getting to grips with HOSAS flight. Man it's sure been tricky so far, but I can see the benefits for sure.

HOSAS is great fun. I can't say if it is more effective or not than other methods but for pure flying a space ship joy HOSAS in elite in VR nothing else I have tried comes close (actually lunar flight does but that is a far simpler game but also superb)

I always fly HOSAS in elite now and even with an incredibly poor left hand stick (it's a very right handed x55 stick) I won't fly another way now, leaving my throttle just for plane flight Sims.

Yeah it definitely is. Had major issues at first though, no default profile for the HOSAS set up so I had to manually configure everything myself. Coming from a controller that's a lot more buttons to map! But the control is so much more granular!

ahh, I've been tempted to buy it but I will need some pretty positive feedback before spending £250ish
£250 for what is still only trying to do what vr completely nails?.
to each their own but if it were me that money would be far better spent on a quest 3s or if you are feeling a little more flush a full fat quest 3.

if you use man maths and take into account a friend referral for the store credit and the free game that is currently bundled then the quest 3s is the same price .

It's a completely different item. It's not going to make my graphics look worse for starters, I also don't have to have a bloody great headset strapped to my face with a choice between a few hours of battery life or having a wire dangling about, plus I can enjoy the on foot sections.

It is not a replacement for VR nor is it trying to be. I do enjoy the VR for a bit as I've said before, this item I've just got as a compromise because I rarely feel like strapping that headset to my head

That's what I was going to say ;)

Plus £250 for a bit of kit for one game, err I've spent close to £500 on HOTAS just for this game.

Wrong game but it was this video that made me even consider it because the whole video is about things that add to the immersion. I know it's about Star citizen but it is all valid for ED.
They added those little chapter things so you can just watch the short segment on that if you want.

It does look good when it works well. I'm starting a new job in the new year so this well may be be my celebratory splurge come first pay check :)

I tried face (not eye) tracking ages ago. My problem was that the monitor stayed still.

I tilt my head up and sure the ship starts to nose up, but I get eye ache trying to look down at the monitor.

It didn't help that I wear glasses. But for me the real eye opener was VR. That was simply amazing.

I've not tried it but I think the trick was to make it move with only small movements of your head so you didn't have to side-eye the screen.

VR is still much nicer though :)

Yeah that sounds rubbish. Ill probably prefer VR when they move away from wearing a hot brick on your face and the image quality vastly improves.

Yes here's hoping that in the next few generations of VR they will solve some if not all of these issues.

edit: having said the above, I still do find sims, and stuff like elite dangerous amazing in VR..

Yeah I do like it, it's just not immersive when I step out my ship which I do a lot, so Id rather use it when I can play 100% of the game in VR rather than half of it.
