******* The "official" Essential iPad Apps thread (with stars) *******

Burnout Crash has been out a few days, pretty decent gameplay and a funky 80s sound track and effects. Its basically crash junctions from the console version of the games.

Its a universal app, but I don't think it works as well on the small screen of the phone, if you have an iPad its worth it, and the phone version to me is a added bonus.

I really like it on the Xbox, it came out about 3 months ago on the arcade.

A South Park who wants to be a millionaire just came onto the App store. loving it! I would consider myself to know a fair bit about South Park but I'm not doing so well!

It looks good, sound is good, questions are good. :D

Has anyone tried Max Payne yet? I'm eager to hear what the controls are like :)
It's actually better than I expected. If you have ever played with a touch d-pad before, you know what to expect. If not, it's kind of hard to explain. The only thing that I feel I should mention is that the button to fire is next to the right d-pad, which is used to aim. Meaning, you can't move your sight, and fire at the same time. In training, it was frustrating, but once you get used to working with the auto aim, it's not too bad at all.

In short, as per GTA III, the controls do inhibit the experience a bit, but you can still have a lot of fun with it. The graphics are blowing my mind, as I remember trying to get it to run on my desktop some years ago... But now you can play it on what was near full settings, on this thing that just looks like a sheet of glass. Incredible.

EDIT: I should also mention that, of course, you can adjust the position of each of the buttons.

That's good to know thanks :)

Finally the new Spotify ipad app is out. Been a premium subscriber for a long time and was only able to use the iphone app. Very well laid out, and looks great on the new Ipad :)

Just been playing with this. The long wait was worth it. Spotify haven't just rolled a slightly modified interface out. This is a fully fledged iPad app and is almost flawless imo. I've already discovered 2 new artists I like as a result of just scrolling through related artists and I think this is the ultimate test of the app: does it encourage you to discover new music? The answer is yes and more so than even the desktop application.

I've used the Spotify desktop software for a long time (I'm still on free) and my complaint has always been that it's hard to discover new music through Spotify. I tried the iPad app (Premium trial) and it looks very nice but it still a struggle to find new stuff based on what you're listening to.

I don't really understand why Spotify don't focus on this as it has the luxury of you being able to listen to entire tracks. iTunes I find has a better 'related content' system but suffers as you have to plonk down 99p to hear all of it.

What I do is search the iPad app for playlists. These are user created and are a great way of diving into music collections other people have cherry picked. For example, run a search for something like "new releases" and check the playlist section of the results. Some people even provide descriptions.

Yup, been doing that on the iPad app, bit hit and miss but not too bad. However today I'm at work using the iPhone version and you can only search for Album/Artist/Track no playlists! :(
