The biggest piece of advice that I would give to anyone that has a fear of dying would be to dock up your faction mission-runner, jump to a clone without expensive implants, grab a bunch of cheap frigates and go have some fun in low-sec or NPC 0.0 for a couple of weeks. I mean, what have you got to lose?
Firstly, you'll have a whole lot of fun at very little expense.
Second, you'll learn so much about offensive & defensive combat tactics, as well as how to travel in hostile space.
Third, you'll realise that getting podded is not such a big deal.
Finally, you will have your eyes opened to what many consider to be 'the real' EVE, instead of sitting in Empire in fear of losing your pimped mission ship to gankers.
It's also very likely you'll find a group of folks that you like and join a decent corp which, in my opinion, is what keeps the game fresh and interesting for the majority of people.
