The *Official* Eve Online Thread

I promised I would report back on my trial so here I am. It's way too complicated for me, even the tutorial does not help me much, my Ship was destroyed within 5 minutes of being deployed and all I was left with was a capsule. I activated it but as soon as I re-deployed I could not do anything because the game kept on telling me I needed to go to safety as my ship was not properly built or some something like that. Thanks anyway, just not my type of game.

as i said when i started this sending of 14 day trials in the screenshot thread, eve is not for everyone, but at least u gave it a try. nothing worse than people commenting about a game but never having experienced it. just so you know, if you dock at any station in your pod you get given the n00b ship again (complete with gun and mining laser) u just select ships from the left hand menu, right click on the ibis (or whatever it's called), select assemble, then right click again and select make active. that should put you in the starting position again.

for anyone else who might be considering it, do give it a go, my sister managed to kill some pirate rat scum and complete the tutorial and the last game she played was rollercoaster tycoon, lol. if she can do it, anyone can.

You have to play it for longer than 14 days to realise what an amazing game it is, I played on and off for about 2 months TRYING to like it, but hating it. It seems like all you're doing is waiting around for skills to finish, but once you get past a certain point and start playing a MMO instead of a single player space sim.

The game is hellishly complicated at first but just read the guides on the official forum and you'll be sorted after a while, even the people who've been playing for years aren't masters at Eve.

thats me summed up in a single sentence, lol.

i did various things when i started playing, had a long break, on returning i spent quite a bit of time building a mining character, then used him to mine the minerals to build myself a battleship, i now do lots of agent missions and am currently trying to get better skills to use ships and equipment to their maximum, and use other races ships too. i got lots of hints for what equipment and stuff to use from the eve forum and other players who know more abotu combat than me.

ive been told that if you spend 3 months learning the right skills you can be succesfully involved in pvp, maybe even less time than that.

Skillpoints are only important to those ppl who suck at pvp.

Obviously you need to be able to fly the ship etc, but a good t1 pilot will have no probs defeating a rubbish t2 pilot.

erm, skill points are important to most people i'd assume, obv. if someone is cack then no skills in the world are gonna help but skills that increase your target range/speed, or damage amount are pretty important. even things like fuel conservation which as im sure you know reduces afterburner cap requirements by 10% per level. that extra cap u then have can be used for shield/armor tanking and repairing or whatever. these are all things that can give you an edge or save your butt depending on the situation.

skills are pretty important, i mean without warp drive 1/ navigation 1 you wouldnt be able to fit warp core stabs

Keeper...

I think Kranix meant that total SP count is not important compared to where you have the SP...

Obviously if you have 5mill SP in industry and 500k SP in gunnery you're gonna suck at PvP.

And just because you may be in a T1 frig rather than a T2 frig doesn't mean you shouldn't have focused skills like gunnery, nav, engy, electronics etc...

Dym

NB: I don't PvP, I don't know how to PvP... But I know a little something about weighting the odds...

Yeah obviously once you have the core skills (energy management, navigation etc) then the rest make very little difference. You will very rarely come across a true 1v1 where skillpoints will make the difference. If your going to die, chances are that 100mil skillpoints wouldnt make a difference in the majoirty of circumstances. Knowing your limits and knowing what to do is far more important than being able to use t2 guns or whatever. Most ppl will base your pvp ability on how many skillpoints you have (especially in gunnery). Just don't overestimate the importance of this.

I've taken out ceptors in my frigate before, just because they assume having lots of skillpoints and t2 guns makes you better than someone who doesnt. After about 5 mil sp, its ALL about the pilot.

This is what I thought. The game is rubbish, it's too complex, it's too boring, and it's just NOT my sort of game.

That was 3 months ago. I now have 2m SP :o
