yeah it blew considering you had 2 amazing champs who are perhaps p4p no1/no2 in Renan and aldo, it was full of decisions.

Varner and Adel were the only one fighting on that card...

Most folk online agree that Aldo use to be good and had finishing fight attitude but he has become like the rest of the other champs like gsp/jones have fighting to keep that belt.

Once you take a picture of you with that gold strapped belt you can't let go....

Renan I reckon is p4p the best, but considering it was his first defence officially and it was perhaps a bad stoppage it won't feel or sit right ever. Renan is technically p4p no1 I would say at least he attempts the finish and fights to look for finishes each time.

Anderson really showed us GOAT worthy status :)

Overeem calling out brock when the talks had already broken down and brock is no longer coming back to ufc did not go too well lol

Nothing much too look forward to in 2 weeks time we got machida/mousai fight the dc vs rashad should be good... but Id bet again they will fight to decision and be safe...
hopefully not !

What a bonehead move this was!!!!

Even if Lesnar was coming back the callout wouldn't have made sense because it was Overeem that effectively retired him the first time around!!

He just wants to be back among the main eventers after 2 (realistically now 3) poor performances!

TUF canada v's australia spoiler alert..

good to see the aussies finally win one.. they took a big scalp there, that'l rock the canadians moral ;)

I don't get why people think his last performance was poor? It was one of the most dominant displays I've seen in the Octagon for a while!

Sure he didn't go balls-to-the-wall to get a finish, but then he was in a must win fight and throwing caution to the wind hasn't exactly worked well for him recently.

It can be a fine line with sports especially fighting, some people just want to be entertained. It's like watching F1 with vettel leading by 40 secs in front, most of the time he keeps that gap and brings it home to get the win. When your clearly ahead why take risks unless its for the crowds entertainment.

Shame about Tom Watson not getting the nod, rolled with him once or twice many years ago when he was new to bjj. Amazing how far he's come!

I'm not saying it wasn't an intelligent performance but Dana White seems to be more impressed with performances and less impressed with records - and rightly so as it makes his cards more sell-able!

Overeem is in a bit of a different spot to most in the UFC in that he's obviously being paid very well and didn't have to put in a performance in order to impress the top brass to keep his spot!

Hell, even Aldo got criticized by White for not being "a finisher" anymore!!!

I understand what you are saying, and the example you cite of Formula 1 is a good one because I stopped watching it many years ago after being an avid fan when I was younger specifically because I found the lack of overtaking to be boring.

I still don't agree with Dana classing it as a "poor performance" though; he outstruck Mir by 139 to 5 for goodness sake, how much more dominant does he have to be?! I think Dana was just angry that so many of the fights on the card ended in a decision, and Overeem bore the brunt of his frustration.

I think the problem was that it was a badly kept secret that a loss would have seen Overeem being cut from the UFC. Both of his last fights were entertaining brawls which ended with him getting caught after dominating the fight early on.

If the promoter (Dana) then turns around and says "you have to get the win, being entertaining isn't enough" then he can't very well turn around after Overeem puts in a dominating but calculated performance and say "you have to be entertaining, winning isn't enough". He can have one or the other, but not both; Dana wants to have his cake and eat it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the UFC wants fighters to take more risks in fights then they should stop cutting them every time they do take a risk and it ends badly.

Anyway Overeem has responded to Dana's criticism, here's his take on the situation:

"In my mind I was actually just focused on not walking into the trap that happened with Travis, where you just punch yourself out and then suddenly you end up in a leglock or an armbar, because that's what Mir is known about,' Overeem said. "He's got this dangerous submission game, he can take a beating, and he's also known for faking a little but, wobbling once you start getting into it, you're in a submission. That was my main focus."

"Dana is a very upfront character, I like that about him, because I like to know where I'm at," Overeem said. "And he's entitled to his opinion, as we all are. I think it was a very technical performance, it is what it is. I can't make more of it now. I can understand him, he's the promoter, he wants to have exciting fights. Ratings matter, fans matter, fans want exciting fight. I hope he also understands my opinion, the ‘loser leaves town match.' Since the Travis fight, [I heard] a lot of things about my cardio. In life sometimes you always don't get what you want."

Overeem put on anything but a poor performance. How anyone could call that a poor performance is beyond me. He dominated Mir in every area better than Cormier did whilst also answering many of the criticisms he received from his previous two fights (Cardio and fight IQ). Dana white really is an idiot sometimes.

If any of you guys listen to Rogans podcast he has warmachine (Jon Koppenhaver) on there this week I believe.

Should be an interesting one!

Can't stand him. He puts me off UFC altogether. The way he handles stuff and the way he carries himself is just awful. Trying to promote a sport against people who claim it as being barbaric etc.. and you have the head of the promotion ****** and blinding, ****ging off just about anyone who disagrees with him and wanting it all his own. If they want fighters to be entertaining but have this 3 fight losing streak you are out policy what can you expect.

Dana can come out with some dumb ****, but if it wasn't for him the UFC wouldn't be around. He does far more good than harm IMO. I like his personalty, it's pretty refreshing, even if he does speak the verbal AIDS on occasion.

If he wants to be entertained, maybe he should pay the fighters more.

I've thought this for a while - can't see Mayweather getting out of bed for the $200k basic pay that Weidman got going in to UFC 168 as champion and headliner!!!!

I know MMA doesn't carry the kind of weight Boxing does at the moment (although it should as boxing is boring as hell atm) but it's only going to get bigger an bigger and the money needs to be there imo!

I can't watch boxing anymore, it's so boring compared to MMA.

I watched a Ricky Hatton PPV fight a few years back and was bored to tears, and that's pretty much when I stopped following boxing altogether.

Seems they've changed the bonuses. Instead of KO of the Night and Sub of the Night, there are now two Performance of the Night bonuses.

They've kept Fight of the Night bonus. But isn't fight of the night usually the best two fighter performances of the night anyway? Will they still be able to win both (FotN and PotN)?

edit: Ugh. Rashad injured. Cormier fight has been cancelled unless someone steps up within the next week.

Chael responded pretty quickly to it though. :p

Dropping the KO and sub bonuses seems to go against everything Dana wants since he usually wants finishes!?!?
