The first fight wasn't close? On the judges scorecards it wasn't - but just about everybody I've ever spoken to about it has Penn winning it.
He landed more strikes, defended 12/13 takedowns, landed better strikes.

The second fight I'll give you, that was lopsided.
The fight was a long time ago, but I can remember that I felt Frankie had taken it. BJ started strong and did what he always does, slows down in the later rounds. I thought Frankie won the last 3 rounds. The second fight wasn't even remotely close, it was as comprehensive as it gets over 5 rounds. So over the space of 2 fights, there can be little doubt on who the better fighter over the 2 fights was.
Point being, he's won twice, one in pretty dominant fashion. So a 3rd fight wasn't needed in the slightest. BJ was ranked nowhere, and Frankie was ranked top 5. UFC basically pushing BJ as a favour more than anything, because he wanted the fight. Obviously Edgar was more than happy to comply, he knew it would be a relatively easy night.
A 3rd fight should be when there's been 2 razor thin decisions, or a 1-1 record. If you ask me the fight made little sense, and it proved that way.
