Good card......

Enjoyable fights all round.

Kattar was superb - really impressive. Brutal finish.

Ngannou - a monster - not sure who would want that fight.....Heavyweight division is a mess at the moment - Ngannou would destroy Cormier.

Cejudo - Good stoppage - nothing wrong with it for me. Surprised at the retirement, but I think he'll be back.

Gaethje - DAMN!! That was impressive as you are going to see - total destruction of Ferguson. Good stoppage as he'd taken so much punishment from the start.

Agree with all this but I don't really understand why everyone seems to be predicting a fight with Cormier - the last time I checked Miocic was champ AND already has a victory over Ngannou - yes I know Stipe is out for a while and Ngannou would doubtless fight a different fight in a return with Miocic but a 3-round loss to Lewis and then 3 super-quick finishes since doesn't tell me anything new about his game! (that being said, WoW on the OK!!!!)

Oh, and fair play to Cejudo walking away IF he's got enough money or something else lined up but if he's hoping to used this as leverage for some super-fights to make some serious $$$ then I think he's overestimating his value to the company! (and the public!)

Problem with Cejudo is he just not marketable at all....neither are the lighter divisions, they just aren't what people want watch. He's a very talented decorated fighter but I think he's bluffing retirement hoping that Dana pays some big money for him to come back.

Ferguson can take a shot but my god he took some serious damage in that fight, crazy. That could take years off his career.

Good card all round.

Great card but it was becoming uncomfortable for me watching Tony taking that volume of power shots!

Apparently Chuck Liddell has been raging to Dana White that it was an early stoppage but it was entirely justified imo!

The Cruz stoppage on the other hand was a bit premature - not saying it would have changed the result but Cruz was definitely trying to get back to his feet!

I have watched enough UFC to know that Ferguson was a mess just before it was stopped. He was shaking his head and generally shouldn't have been there at that point. He took so many shots to the face and head and he wasn't coming back. All that would have happened was he would have been knocked out completely and potentially suffered life altering injuries. He was dazed and confused and wasn't defending himself.

How anyone can say that's an early stoppage is beyond me, he was long past being done. His corner should have thrown the towel in early in the 5th, if not late in the 4th when he was doing the funky chicken. A fighter needs to be saved from himself sometimes, his chin is out of this world but that doesn't mean he isn't prone to taking major damage.

Chuck saying it was early isn't surprising, his career went on years after it should have done and he probably suffered brain damage based on how many times he got knocked stiff.

Tony's corner was embarrassing, they were useless. He ended up looking like a dying animal still instinctually flailing it's limbs - seeing him (and more specifically hearing every hard shot he took due to the lack of crowd noise) get battered that heavily was almost perverse. Right time to stop it - he couldn't defend himself properly, wasn't going to quit, and it's not like Justin needed to do anything else to secure the win. Keeping it going would have been unnecessarily cruel, needed to be put out of his misery before any more damage would have been done.

I haven't watched replays but I felt like Cruz was taking enough undefended ground and pound that he gave the ref the excuse to call it; even if you're moving your body there's only so many times you can take punches to the head unanswered before the ref decides that's enough. If that had happened 2 secs later he'd have been saved by the bell, although Henry had been dominant enough that I don't think the result would have been any different if it had gone 3/4/5 rounds.

Agreed! it was becoming quite horrific seeing the amount of damage Ferguson was taking. Those saying it was a pre-mature stoppage should be careful they don't get what they wish for. MMA is seen by many as a barbaric activity, and if there is a high profile fatality, or serious brain injury in the ring then the anti MMA brigade will be out in force and you could see sponsors disappear!

Normally I'd agree but I also think you need to take into account the fact that that Cejudo isn't known as a power hitter, added to which Cruz might not have been "defending himself" in the traditional sense in terms of covering up but trying to get to his feet is a form of defence in and of itself!

For me the because he was trying to get up coupled with with fact that the round was about to end anyway, he should have been given a bit more latitude by the ref!

It retrospect he would have been better to pull Cejudo onto him and wait it out until the end of the round.

That said, I still think Cejudo was looking the better fighter and probably would have won anyway!

Yep that was the moment he was done. Despite the hype he's always eaten punches and it was only a matter of time till he faced someone who could lump him hard enough and often enough that he'd end up too damaged to dish anything out in return. If his next fight is against Pourier the same thing will happen.

Felt bad for Tony towards the end. He took far too much punishment.
I kindof expected his style to cause more problems for gaethje but it seemed like he was a step behind. and what was with the sand thing?

Cruz didn't look like he stood much of a chance. A lot of his punches were falling short and Cejudo looked much quicker

He’s always done weird stuff in the octagon, it’s usually when he’s trying to hype himself into that hard to predict El Cuy Cuy mode where you get fists and elbows flying in from all directions. Didn’t get the chance to settle though and just got picked off. People were saying he should have tried something other than standing trading blows, but Tony has only ever really had a reactive ground game - I saw an analysis video today that said he hadn’t completed a taken down in 5 years, and during that period he’d only attempted one twice or something.

His chin, engine and ability to do weird things have always got him out of trouble, and perhaps the Justin of a few fights ago who went charging in Leroy Jenkins style might have gotten the damage people expected, but Tony came up against a very disciplined striker who patiently applied death-by-a-thousand-strikes without much answer other than that uppercut in the 2nd, which might have rocked another fighter, but unfortunately for him Justin can take a bit of a beating himself and it had no impact.

I see Conor came out on social media afterwards, insulted all the guys at the top of the division and called out Justin for good measure - looking forward to seeing him get smashed and tap out again!

And who would have ever thought that this would describe Justin Gaethje! :D

Yeah he's back to his usual obnoxious self treating history to his particular style of rose-tinted glasses!

Indeed. If Ferguson had come out of that beating with a permanent injury (he still might tbh), things would have to change. Cuts, blood, fractures, KOs, are fair game, but someone having their brain smashed about like that for 5 rounds isn't doing anyone any good. It's a difficult one to referee though because he did appear to be just soaking it up, even though it became apparent at the end that he was just getting cumulatively knocked senseless.

Damn Teixeira really gave Smith a beating last night, terrible corner work again just like the Ferguson/Gaethje fight. Sure he looked good in the first round or so, but after that he took so much unnecessary damage it was getting hard to watch again.

Woodley is done - looks utterly disinterested, got completely and totally dominated (as one sided a fight as I've ever seen in years).

Glad to see the back of him - 5 fights in 3 years is someone who clearly doesn't have the passion for it any longer.

Burns looked great, he has all the tools to be champion. Glad Woodley is on a slide I’m tired of his bitching and complaining.
