**The Official Everything MMA Related Thread**

I havent seen anyone else say this yet but I really want to see Chael Sonnen fight Anderson Silva again because I'm a big fan of silva's and that last fight he got beaten badly for best part of 25 mins, and got a good triangle and would just be good to see a rematch.

Howcome there hasnt been a rematch already? Any reason you can think of? Didn't chael get cleared of that steroids charge?

I just think it would be an amazing rematch.

Steroids and suspended sentence for fraud. I thought he deserved a rematch as he dominated Silva for the first four and a half rounds.

On another note, I just joined my University MMA society. Absolutely lethal workout, I have never been more tired, or felt better at the same time. Anyone recommend some basic gear? I already have some fabulously outlandish shorts :D I am thinking gloves, cup, new gumshield as my old Rugby one is horrendously small and maybe some compression shorts.

you want some hand wraps too, the longer the better and check youtube how to wrap them up properly

ebay is your best bet for cheap stuff.

Gloves you will likely need 16oz Boxing gloves for sparring, and then maybe some MMA sparring gloves which are like 8oz and also then some bog standard MMA gloves.

Gum shield, personally I don't get on with boil and bite, a custom made shield is worth the money. Way more comfortable and probably protect your teeth much better too.

Only compression shorts I've ever worn for MMA is the ones my cup slides into (shock doctor) if I didn't have those, I wouldn't bother.

other things you may need, wraps as already stated, shin guards, elbow and knee pads and possibly a head guard.

It's not cheap picking up all the gear, I've got a bag of stuff I lug around as I never know what I'll be needing on any given day.

Get a cup, Get a cup, Get a cup

I'm not a big fighter myself, nor do I train consistently, I get away with MMA gloves, Gum shield, shorts and CUP.

Where I train they have tatty boxing gloves for sparring hard.

nice bet for a double on the weekend. Johnson, wiman. easy money

What are people thinking for 136?

Main card
Lightweight Championship bout: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Gray Maynard
Featherweight Championship bout: José Aldo (c) vs. Kenny Florian
Middleweight bout: Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann
Lightweight bout: Joe Lauzon vs. Melvin Guillard
Featherweight bout: Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan

Got the exact same pickings, I feel Gray will not hold back... I dont think edgar will either both do not want another draw its do or die for now, only one shall have his hand raised I just feel Grays power will come thru.

I got a bad feeling Kenny may proove an upset, otherwise jose is top choice here kennys last chance for ufc gold @ 35 I think he wants to at least say once in his career he was the best even if its for 5 minutes even. Sonnen once it goes to the ground... Melvins power and take down defense for an easy win.... Nam phan is gonna go for it for the win :)

If you are just starting out i would just stick with some boxing gloves or mma gloves and a gum shield and at a push a cup. Although all the above are quite cheap so may as well get them all.

It depends how your gym works, when you are starting out. you may use mma gloves for sparing. At ours for beginners it's boxing gloves for beginners and mma gloves for advanced

As for wraps etc it's pointless as you will be swapping doing different things all the time, so they will just become an annoyance. Until you get more into it.

Something like http://www.mandmdirect.com/products-Lonsdale-Fight-Gloves-Black_LB157.htm About £10

something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shock-doc...t=UK_Protective_Equipment&hash=item19c071f74a £15

something like http://www.only-cricket.com/product...ock-doctor-ultra-carbon-flex-groin-guard.aspx £10

Cheap enough for starting out, and should last you a while until you get more into it. But just take notice of how your gym trains, as every gym will do it slightly differently so get your equipment based on that.

At a push a cup? Are you joking, a cup is one of the things you can't be doing without, got protect those plums!

Also those gloves don't appear to show the oz, near enough every single gym I have ever sparred at has only allowed it with 16oz's as far as I can see those are 12's or 14's, nowhere seems to know for sure. Yes, you will end up using MMA gloves to spar eventually, but not for a long time, and even then you can't spar as hard in MMA gloves as you can in 16oz's.

Personal preference but I'd avoid the velcro gloves, they cut peoples faces.

Again wraps are a must to protect your wrists, if you are new to punching and hitting heavy bag you will need the protection as your punching technique is probably not going to be very good.

Even if you start buying everything cheap first, you will get use out of it and then upgrade if you get more serious. I know that is what I did, most of my first equipment was cheap, and that showed in quality.

If you are starting out you are very unlikely to be being hit in your groin a lot but at the price of £10 you may as well as i said.

As for OZ weight of gloves it makes very little difference to you force, only a little more cushioning to the person receiving the blow, because of spreading the force over a slightly larger area. So reduces swelling etc Which again you are very unlikely to get starting out.

And again for the Velcro and wraps with him just starting out i would guess he will be doing lots of different thing, so changing stuff quite a lot, velcro and no wraps just makes it easier.

But each to their own.

Why because he is new will he not get kicked in the groin? New people practicing kicks and checking kicks are more likely to kick each other in the groin than trained people.

I don't know about the science of it, all I know is most gyms won't allow sparring without 16's so you might as well get 16's or end up wasting your money.

Doing lots of different things, doesn't change the fact you should support your wrists, and being that wraps cost £5 there is no reason not to. An wraps are something that will last a long time, you won't need to replace them anytime soon.

The thing about velcro is from personal experience, I have some Hayabusa Gloves, and the velcro would cut peoples faces during sparring. So I switched to laced gloves.

That may have been more due to the Hayabusa model of glove than velcro itself.

All these things suggested are going to prevent injury, there is nothing worse than really getting into your training and then getting injured due to lack of protective equipment.

Train hard but train safe.

New guys have as much chance of getting injured as anyone else. Most people will be sparring in their first lesson (unless they choose not too) operating on the "hit as hard as you want to get hit" system so it can be a light or hard spar depending on them.

If I was a new guy I'd much rather get punched in the face with a 16oz glove in my first lesson as opposed to 12s. I use 14oz gloves personally because the gyms I train at allow it and because I'm a small guy and 16's look ridiculous on me. :p

omg the edgar vs maynar stare down... never had a chill down my spine

Really interesting! I didn't even know it existed, I'll be watching them all from now on.
They've been going for a while now. Really cool stuff from an interesting perspective!

This card, on paper, looks fantastic. I have no doubt it's gonna live up to it.

I don't like it when two guys I like fight one and other, and I must be one of the few to actually like Chael. I think maybe he's gonna shock a few people with his stand-up because I can't see him shooting a double and pounding on Stann for 3 rounds, and Stann is obviously a beast on his feet so he must have focused on his striking.

Who the **** knows. Impossible to call.
