Ughhh in the last few days IRL I've experienced easily the two most frustrating defeats ever in my entire FM-playing career. I swear sometimes this game makes me want to punch my cat square in its whiskers.
First defeat:
It's the Champions League final, last game of the season. I've already won every domestic trophy (Community Shield, Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup) and every other continental or global trophy (Euro Super Cup, Club World Championship). All I need to do now is win the CL final to do an unprecedented septuple, which I have never managed before in FM08.
We control the game for the first half and most of the second. With 20 minutes left to go, we are up 4-1. Surely it is all over? Arsenal nick a goal back - 4-2. No problem though - with only
three minutes left of regular time, we're still two goals to the good. Then my CB, under no pressure, passes the ball straight to Bendtner and gives him a clear run at goal. 4-3. Finally, deep into injury time, my left-back inexplicably fouls an Arsenal winger just inside the box when they're chasing a ball that is clearly running out of play. Penalty converted, 4-4.
There was never going to be a happy ending after this. Bendtner nicks another in extra time and the dream is over.
Second defeat:
The season afterwards, perhaps inspired to make amends for last year's CL flop, my team have made a storming defence of the Premiership. After 35 games, we have a record of won 32, drawn 3, lost 0. Even those three draws have been the most ridiculous flukes you can imagine (the sort where you have 30 shots to the other team's 2 and you draw 2-2). We look to be a near-certainty to pull off my first ever unbeaten season in FM08.
Games 37 and 38 are home games against relegation candidates Leicester and QPR, so the last real hurdle is game 36, Spurs away. We beat them 5-0 at home, so this should be a formality, right?
My keeper has a nightmare, Bojan picks up a knock and has to go off just after half-time, and we are thoroughly and infuriatingly trounced by a Spurs side full of players that could not even get a game for my reserves. The highlight was their 31-year old Bolivian international striker, who has only scored five goals in the whole league season, bagging a hat-trick. GG unbeaten season. Aaaaaaarghhhh.
It's not just that we didn't manage the septuple, or the unbeaten season, it's that both times we came
so close and then somehow conspired to throw it all away when all the hard work had already been done. Anyway sorry for the novel-length post, I just wanted to rant.
