ok so i spent an evening on FM08 :D loving it! The story so far...

well just choosing a team in the premiership was hard enough as i didnt want too good a team that they wanted to win or do real well. (just incase i was rusty) So i plumped for Reading.

After playing around with my staff i have a pretty good training camp if the ******** would stop stealing my scouts... ive lost 2/3 now :(

I signed a real good young goal keeper but his kicking is 6 :( so when he kicks it barely makes the half way line... is there anything i can do to improve this skill? although its comical to watch it kinda puts the team in trouble lol.

I cant seem to get any work permits atm, they are always rejected... any way of improving chances of successful permits (yes i have apealed when turned down.)

Well thats it for now, big up the reading!

you need to go for people with 'caps'

Started again with Southampton who I'm finding are really good to play with. Bradley Wright-Phillips is really brilliant, average rating so far this season of 7.8 and has 15 goals in 12 games. Bit odd though is Youseff Safri, his technical stats are really poor, the only good stat he has is tackling which is 16 and the rest of the stats are under 12 and majority are under 9/20. However he's been extremely consistent so far and I'm finding myself wanting to player over another play who destroys him in stats.

I'm really struggling for tactics with the game right now, especially with lower league sides. Do people just stick to one default tactic or do they alternate depending on the team they are playing with?

I have two tactics, they are meant for home and away but I use them mostly depending on how difficult I rate the side I'm playing... the away one is more defensive and the home one is more aggresive towards attacking so if I'm playing a more poor squad I'd go with the home tactic even if I'm not at home. Same goes for playing a better team, such as I just played Liverpool as Soton, I used away when I was at home as it's more defensive.

I usually retweak depending on how the first 5 - 10 minutes of the game go, you can instantly tell if the tactic is working well because you'd end up with more shots than then have... however if they are pilling the shots in and you have practically none, then I try the alternative tactic and that normally works out for me (maybe with a tweak or two).

Personally, I use the 4-2-3-1 home & away tactics by Croat whch I find are the best that I've seen for 8.0.1. You can download them here:

See if they work out for you, they are great for me as Soton (although I must admit they weren't great with Sunderland in the Premiership, but kind of a given since they are really hard to play with at the start of the season as the team is poor and they just got promoted).

No prob :) Just to note on the tactics also - he uses a Playmaker, which is meant to be the midfielder who is set more definsively (two mid's in total - one is attacking, one is defensive) - also with a slower back line you might wan to remove "Play Offside" as that'll just end in ruins if your back line is slow and the opposition attackers are quick.

Signed him for fairly cheap as a backup to bring on occasionally..but i got this as a result.

Read the news story.

I know its not FM08, but found this old screenshot from the last game.

Notice it says Go To Match.

If you've got a young keeper then see if you can get him to "interact" with an older keeper who has better kicking. Just tell him he could learn from so and so or could do with copying so and so' approach to the game. After a while, your younger keeper should "learn the moves" of the older player. Not so sure if this would work as well with keepers as for outfield players.

thanks, he is keen to learn and my exp keeper is willing to teach

Tell you what I do find weird with FM08 is this player is similar to someone else. A player can have one player in their friend list, then is similar to another player and then the coaches say that you should get him to train with another player.

And I find it so stupid that I have a youth player who is a DR. Not even a DRC. And who do the coaches suggest I get to mentor him? A DL. Not a DLC! No, no DC similarity here.

I find it's good practice to bring in several of the 16/17 year olds with PA's of 165+ and mentoring them. Make a good player out of them in the future, or alternativley make a good profit. Lulinha is a fine example, starts at 17 in Corinthians - cost me £3m and has a PA of 192. Will be a goldmine, if i ever decide to sell. There are plenty you can get on a free too. Henri Saivet comes to mind.

There is a huge list on the SI boards, I'll have to find the link. Apologies if it has been mentioned previously.

Think the only way to find out that though is to use the scout editor but lots of people consider it a bit cheaty so they might not, but personally I don't and it helps clubs who's board is too tight to send scouts abroad.

It's a bit cheaty, but at it's only presenting information, rather than editing it. Rather that than trust my moronic scouts.

"Buy James Vaughn, he's awesome, and clearly better than your current #1 striker Fernando Torres"

I quite like doing this as well. :D

Henri Saivet I do normally get quite cheap. Under a million. Bojan is almost impossible to tempt to Old Trafford. Longer term I try to get Alexandre Pato.

Yeah. :D I found FM05/06 quite funny when you get a scout report on a very promising youth player. The game then compares them to your best player and says he's rubbish. Er yes but my player is established and at the top of his game. This youth player is young and not even 20 yet. So although he's brilliant and the game finds one little fault, I can't help but think that the game should recognise the comparative ages of the players and say that the youth player isn't anywhere near the older player NOW but in the future.....

Ive just decided im going to give myself a new challenge for when i go offshore, 2weeks of solid FM play on a night :D just due to been bored with my current game on the laptop, now manager of Arsenal and winning everything I want.

So I will be starting a game with the default manager status "unknown" and try to become a "world-class" manager in the shortest time I can. Going to be running a lot of leagues especially lower ones just to see where I start off. This could either be challenging and fun or annoying and I might soon be back as Arsenal winning haha. Hopefully I can keep going though.

not sure if anyone is interested but i found enrico chiesa and serginho (if u can get him to sign) to be very nice players to bolster up an injury riddled team.

my reading bench is looking like a war hospital. I have players going off every other game. fortunately theres still 3 days before window closes and i can pick those 2 golden oldies for around 100k each hehe. not bad.

Btw is there any chance of signing a player with 0 caps and needs a work permit? im considering loading saving all the time till they approve is it 0% or 0.001% etc lol :S
