Oh! mekrel gone from the GS 2 to the GN
Didn't think that would happen!
What do you think of it overall compared to the GS 2 for speed, smoothness etc.
I've had it quite a while, unfortunately my gadget obsession that I think all men are born with meant I had to get it.
In summary, it's a great phone because as a complete package; it's a joy to use. This is mainly down to Ice Cream Sandwich though as obviously, the hardware certainly isn't top notch in every area.
My main concerns when buying the device were amount of storage with lack of memory card, camera ability and speed of the GPU. Thankfully, the GPU really does appear to hold its own, Shadowgun plays very smoothly at 720p resolution when I found a relief and very surprising.
The storage is an issue for me personally as I like to carry all my music around and I probably have about 14Gb of the stuff. I was really relying on Google Music cloud storage and 3's unlimited data to be a work around, but unfortunately, Google Music ended up being US only launch. I've tried Tor Browser to fool Music beta site into signing up but Google know's my account is an English one and I really can't be bothered with having two accounts and setting up a US one through Tor.
Personally, I've always HATED stock Android which is why I've always insisted on manufacturer overlays because they added a lot of functions that stock Android just didn't have. I can now say that I think Ice Cream Sandwich is brilliant, functions really well and looks great to boot. There's still the obvious omissions from Google, such as T9 dialer but for the most part; it's just the universal polished UI that Android needed.
The new Google applications are so fantastic, especially Gmail, YouTube, Maps and Calendar. As well as looking great, the system on a whole is very fast with the only slow down coming from the transition from home screen to app drawer and visa versa. Web browsing deserves a special mention, it's smooth and so feature packed with the ability to sync bookmarks etc with Chrome Desktop; finally!
The smoothness of it really highlights how much a good job Samsung did with TouchWiz and Gingerbread on the SII, the Galaxy Nexus browsing is just as smooth but without the downside of non-dithered 16bit images that you get on the SII. At first the SII browser did seem quicker still, but from what I can tell, the GSII has scrolling acceleration which is very sensitive. I.e. it will increase the velocity at which the browser scrolls, the faster you "fling" your finger up the screen. The Nexus isn't so aggressive with it, but it's still very smooth and I've yet to experience any "chequerboard" effect.
Basically, if the camera quality isn't critical for the consumer and the lack of expandable memory isn't an issue; then it's hard not to sing this phone's praises.
I'm actually looking forward to a CyanogenMod release, they may add some of the missing things such as T9 dialer. Previously I didn't like CyanogenMod by nature that it was based on stock Android UI, which prior to ICS; I hated.
I hope the Galaxy SII users get a 100% working ASOP release, as apart from the screen resolution; the Galaxy SII will be a formidable phone with ICS. Well, as long as the camera quality remains the same with an AOSP ROM as it did with 2.3x TouchWiz ROMs.
Reason why I hope that is because I've seen the TouchWiz version briefly demonstrated
here and if I was still a GSII user, I would be disappointed if this was what I was waiting for. Looks like they've taken Android 4.0 and made it look exactly like the Gingerbread TouchWiz ROMs...
The ability to install an ASOP ROM that's fully working, will be a major influence in my future handset choices now. I really think Ice Cream Sandwich is that good, so it will just come down to hardware and the ability to run an ASOP rom.
