***** The Official Galaxy Nexus Thread *****

you can use the tutorial at XDA, its like 3 mouse clicks. Use the toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310

and then the tutorial is this http://leemn.wordpress.com/2012/02/01/galaxy-nexus-upgrade-to-official-roms-yakju-build/ scroll down toi see the tutorial using the toolkit. Basically you are unlocking the bootloader, then download the image you want, there is an option in the toolkit, and then you just click to flash the image, the rest is taken care by the toolkit.

Remember that you need to have a backup of your sd, pictures, mp3's and stuff because you will loose everything.

If you find the courage to proceed :D, i suggest the latest 4.2.1 JOP40D or JZO54K 4.1.2 version. Here you can find all the images for the Gnex https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

Damn, wish I'd seen this sooner.

I had a go at flashing 4.2.1 the "standard" way but had some problems with the drivers - phone wasn't identified at fastboot. After this is was getting late so just tried a factory reset to see if that fixed my problems:

Bluetooth disconnecting and not turning on/off.
GPS not finding satellites.
General lag/stutteryness all round.

The reset fixed the GPS and stutteryness, but the BT and wake/sleep lag problems remain.

@ anyone who has flashed 4.2.1: do you get about 0.5-1 second delay when waking/sleeping phone? If not, I'll try the toolkit method.

How do I fully wipe my phone?

Had it over a year now and it's a tad more sluggish than it should be.

I tried the built in 'factory data reset', but it still has some remnants of my old programs etc on there.

I've not installed any 3rd party mods etc on there, but willing to do so if I need to.

It shouldn't do, a factory reset should return it to how it came out the factory, hence the name.
Are you sure that its not just re-installing some of your apps/settings from Google Backup when you add your account on first boot?

https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakju download the factory image and run the batch file (you'll need fastboot and the bootloader needs to be unlocked) it'll restore it to total factory and also wipe the storage. So make sure you backup any pics/videos etc else it'll be gone forever!

Aha, this is what it's done, didn't think it would reinstall any apps that I didn't ask it to.

The OS itself seems pretty nice, some forward thinking new features. However with the lack of easy porting or compatibility of Android apps the OS is dead on release, imo anyway.

This thread seems to be slowing down.

As a result of the phone theft Cerberus thread I'm looking into rooting my Gnex.

I've had Cerberus for a while now but am worried that it may be found if my goes for a walkabout.

So I have a couple of questions regarding pro's and con's of rooting.

1) Will I still get OTA updates
2) If not what do I need to do
3) Is there a fool proof way of rooting my 4.2.1
4) Is Titanium backup the best way to backup
5) After backup and rooting is done can I just restore from Titanium backup and my phone will act the same as Pre root

Think thats it for now

Cheers
Matt

^^ haha... yup, I'm kinda getting bored of mine. But nothing out there yet that makes an upgrade worth it...

Anyway:

1) Will I still get OTA updates
- yes, but may not successfully install if you do funny things with root (e.g. modify the build.prop file)

2) If not what do I need to do
- ...

3) Is there a fool proof way of rooting my 4.2.1
- i use WugFresh Nexus Root Toolkit - http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/

4) Is Titanium backup the best way to backup
- i've always heard so, but haven't really used it much...

5) After backup and rooting is done can I just restore from Titanium backup and my phone will act the same as Pre root
- ...

edit: if I remember correctly I always seem to lose root after an OTA update. So i always reroot
and yes, i cba with proper punctuation - the footballs on!

When you root you should choose the option to install a custom recovery so you can install pre rooted stock roms and latest custom roms - once you root I would just forget abot OTA official updates and just wait a day or two for it to come out on xda on a custom ROM.

I Nexus Root Toolkit to root - was supposed to wipe my phone but it didn't - I was luck I guess.

Once rooted install TITANIUM BACKUP to backup all apps (with settings+data). Awesome handy app.

Restore apps (I only backup market apps, not system apps as I hear they conflict with different roms etc) via Ti-b. All in one go via batch function.

Watch a few youtube vids to see hows it's done too.

Lol should've checked this thread before I hit the go buttons

Ok so now I'm unlocked and rooted...Yay

hardest part was getting the drivers to work (Anyone reading the drivers are the ones on the PC I was worried that it meant drivers on the phone)

I used the backup facilities in wug's nexus toolkit.

So I'm now going to try an restore those backups. Wish me luck

4.2.1 and 4.2.2 are both pants. The BT bug is really starting to frustrate as it means I can't connect to the car, or if it does connect, it only holds a connection for 3-4 seconds at a time before disconnecting and reconnecting in a loop.

Gone back to 4.1.2.
