i know this sounds a bit noobish but to experience full ics do i need to upgrade from cpw or p4y rather than vodafone (just worried they might put their bloatware on it)

I think ics will let you easily remove any bloatware anyway.

I got a note from Phones For You and it was a reference handset, no branding and was unlocked out of the box.

It depends where you get it from. If it's from a carrier directly it will probably be SIM-locked.

If it's direct from O2, it probably will be as Andy said.

Kyle's was on contract via P4U, they often (and all the other third party companies) use factory unlocked, stock handsets. The carriers often don't.

My HTC Desire was direct from Vodafone and was unlocked and unbranded. The only sign of Vodafone on it was the 'My Vodafone' section. Apart from that, not even a boot logo, All Stock.

I'm betting Orange havn't made a compatible launcher for ICS so this might launch in a mostly* stock way

*but it will probably include such joys as Monopoly trial, trafficTV, Sims 3 and a whole bunch of other crap.
