*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Hmm, so it looks like there is actually 2 different styles of tablet UI for Android. One with the notification bar at the top and the 3 soft buttons in the middle at the bottom, and another where its all at the bottom with notifications on the bottom right and the soft buttons bottom left.

Apex launcher on my 7 is using the 1st setup, which is like a phone setup. Is there any way to force it to the 2nd setup with everything on the bottom? Is this a 10" tablet only thing or an ICS thing?

The notification bar at the top and soft buttons at the bottom is the way JB is supposed to be? I've never seen it be any other way?

I've only seen JB on a Nexus 7, so don't know if that's how it is now, but pretty much every other tablet I've seen before looks like this

Is it redundant now in JB?

I believe the Nexus 7 uses a Phone layout instead of a Tablet layout that's why its looks different from other Android Tablets. I think there is a Rom or hack via root to enable the tablet layout.

You're right. If you're rooted, its possible to change the dpi setting which puts the OS into tablet mode after rebooting.

Ah cool. Seems the 7 runs an odd hybrid then, with a tablet home screen (more icons than phones) but a phone style notification bar and off keys. I can imagine the buttons may get a bit small using the tablet style on a 7" screen though.

This isn't odd, it's usual for a lot of 7 inch tablets like the HTC Flyer, Galaxy Tab, Tab 2 etc.

I'm hopefully going to be picking up one of these tomorrow. Can someone point me in the direction of some good sites with guides on the whole rooting / jailbreaking system, I'm interested in seeing what you can actually do with this bad boy.

Any advice or tips are most welcomed!

Here's the one and only site you'll need:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1673

Be sure to register, but that's the direct link for all things Nexus 7 related. And if you want specifics on unlocking and rooting, just google ;)

But XDA Forums is the best place for such things.

OK so I installed the XenonHD ROM and in the settings it has an option to switch to tablet mode. I did so and voilá:

Really liking it so far, makes it easier to use one-handed I think.
