**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Large bezels, design is not symmetrical, no wireless charging, inferior water resistance (to Sony and Samsung), inferior display, only 4GB of RAM (6GB should be the minimum now), no audio jack.

.....

"Large bezels"---I played with the Pixel 2 XL in store and the bezels were hardly noticeable.
"Design.." ---- so easy to hold this phone in the hand.
"no wireless charging"....who needs it? You have super fast charging on the go---many have reported 50% charging in 15 mins.
"RAM" ----RAM meet Google Cloud. No contest.
"No audio jack"---he shrugs shoulders.

Agree with jimlad.....phone of the year.

Meh, for a phone in this price range all of the boxes for these should be ticked, too many people are accepting less for more these days.

Will be interesting to see how the OnePlus 5T compares to this, I doubt that will be cheap either.

What has Google Cloud got to do with RAM (not that I agree that 4Gb isn't enough)? Since when has RAM been swapped to storage in the cloud?

If it wasn't due to the screen, I think the 2XL would be phone of the year. I personally can't call a phone with 2013 screen quality the phone of 2017. The display is one of the most important parts of the phone, it's the part of the device you interact with the most.

Might seem like I'm being overly critical here but that's because 1) I'm disappointed as this was going to be my next phone and 2) Google has priced the Pixel in the arena of the latest offerings from other manufacturers and they need to deliver the same quality.

As someone who uses wireless charging everyday and hasn't plugged in his phone for months and months, I can tell you its the one thing I will miss the most. As I did when I had the OP5 for a week, dispite how quick dash charging was, which is a crap ton faster than the Pixels.

It sounds silly, but being able to just 'put your phone down' and it charges is something that you get very used to very quickly and miss it when you don't have it. Believe me.

Also, obligatory Ok Google comment.

On the plus side it does have stereo speakers, a large battery and a good camera, but for the price their asking for that's not enough imo.

I had high hopes for this phone, but these specs are not even remotely tempting.

Completely agree and same goes for pixel 2 too. Such a shame as I just know come the next big android update, I'm going to find myself wishing I had a google device again!!!!

OK, Google.

:p

Found a store in NI that actually had both devices and I honestly think that the unit I saw today was a good bit better than the one I saw in London last week.
The sRGB colour profile isn't ideal for some but to me it looked better than the sRGB on my Pixel XL - I know it should look the same but it WAS better. I reckon if Google can re-enable the option to turn off sRGB all 2 XL owners will be on to a winner.

I loaded up the JasonFarrell.com dead pixel test to see how the screen performed on different coloured backgrounds. On all but Green (I'll come to that) it was much better than my XL and the white balance is on point. As for the tilt-tint when rotating top to bottom so to speak I didn't see a phone in the shop that didn't have some colour shift including the Samsungs. On the side-to-side tilt the colour shift was definitely noticeable and if the phone was being used below eye level (say on an aeroplane seat tray as I've done many a time) I think it would be noticeable on brighter backgrounds.

Anyway, back to the 'GREEN'. Every time I loaded the green background on the test there was DEFINITELY image retention and it looked very grainy however this did fade. Unfortunately there was no Grey screen option on the test so I couldn't replicate the problems already highlighted. Apart from the green screen all the other backgrounds were totally pin sharp.

I have no theory as to why the image retention and grainy look only appeared on the green screen, hypotheses are welcome!

Just to offer my riposte to the comments at the top of the page.

I think the general design bezels and all is very nice. I played with the S8 and S8+ and I can't see how I will ever get used to that infinity curved display, it just looks weird!

I love the fast charging on these phones. I had Samsungs S6/S7 previously and got swept up in the whole wireless charging thing and having experienced both give me fast charging any day. I have definitely been pulled out of more holes getting a quick 30-40% while showering to go out than I have with a wireless option. Plus the battery on Pixels is so damn good that it doesn't need to be sitting on a charging pad all day at my desk anyway.

RAM - no idea what the Google cloud comment was about. If I was to guess was our Google Rep referring to the Instant Apps that are accessible? They are pretty cool but I've hardly ever needed to use them. 4gb in the Pixels is plenty. The Samsung Note needs 6gb because of all the bloat that's running on it.

No audio jack - I'm on the fence TBH. I have a great set of bluetooth headphones but also have a great set of Samsung earbuds (from the S5 or 6 I think) that always come in really handy, although maybe the Pixel buds might render these obsolete - only time will tell.

Some of your points are not worth debating but hey

Bezels on XL are fine. (agree if looks u want the standard pixel could have done better)

Ip67 is fine. You really want the 68 so you leave it in the toilet for an extra hour ?

Headphones. Really the 3.5 jack will be gone in 18 months across every phone.

Wireless charging well Google did that with the Nexus 4 and it was a gimmick then. No need with fast charging. Just because apple brought it back does not mean it's good again.

4gb is clearly enough the pixel 1 is still way faster than any flag ship. An optimised device does not need endless memory.

With regards to wireless charging, for a lot of people it means you don’t have to run the risk of a port not working over prolonged use. While I prefer using a cable because it’s faster, others have pointed out it can be useful if you’re in a Starbucks. For me, I don’t spend long enough in one to be able to charge my phone enough of a percentage to warrant using it.

And from Google’s standpoint, they have all the analytics they need to see how many people that own wireless charging devices actually use it.

And with regards to 4GB of RAM - it’s plenty adequate, and while with more RAM you could have more tasks open, it would mean battery would suffer as a result. I’d rsther have to re open apps every now and then rather than have battery life suffer because more processes are eating up standby time.
