**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

My N5X has just gone into bootloop. Not sure if I should get a Pixel 2 ordered or not.

pixel 2 seems fine and reviews are great, only downside is the bezel size if you are into looks. Its the XL2 with questions about the screen that seems to the issue at the moment.

Just got my pixel 2. So far impressed, will take little getting used to a smaller screen again but very nippy, tried a portrait selfie which turned out very good. Now to work out what i am going to do case wise. Half tempted by one of them moment lens cases. i did buy a cheap LK screen which is actually not bad, but i prefer a solid case. Did people end up putting glass screen protectors on?

The OP5 I had (128 GB, 8 GB RAM) was rapid AF, can't take that away from it, I'd have kept it if the camera was on par with or better than my S7E. In fact in some ways I wish I had kept it, ut I use the camera too much and it just didn't do it for me.

If the P2XL ends up going back and the OP5T is any good, I'll have one.

None of my oneplus phones were anywhere near as nippy as a pixel. In fact the oneplus 3 or 4 I had is now a WiFi only Netflix player for my kid

OnePlus 3 and 5 still dominate in speedtests and multitasking over the original Pixel, even though many say 4GB is enough the Pixel was reloading apps when the OnePlus devices were not.

I agree that Wifi performance on the OnePlus 3 was not the best but it was enough max out my 100Mb connection, I've seen the OnePlus 5 match the Pixel XL up to 220Mb so I see no issue with Wifi performance there.

That reminds me, with all this talk of what's important and what isn't, it's time for another survey!

Please take 2 minutes to submit your thoughts :) I did it last year and have a video on my channel about the responses. I'll make a separate thread now about it.

I've done it, but this question doesn't make sense

Value *
Is the price a big factor

I don't mind the cost / Needs to be cheap

Just because a phone is cheap doesn't mean it represents good value. Likewise, an expensive phone can be good value. It all depends on what's being offered and the services wrapped around the product.

Yeah, reasonable point. I've changed 'Needs to be cheap' to 'Needs to be good value'. Of course you can spend £400 on a phone and it be amazing value.

Some interesting stuff I've just been reading...

First up, Stephen hall of 9to5Google. He's got a replacement 2XL.

First impression (although I have no idea how this is going to age): graininess went from borderline garbage to borderline unnoticeable.

No side by side as he says its near impossible to capture on camera though.

Next up:
François Simond (supercurio) on Pixel 2 XL #expertise by MKBHD

Since getting in touch with +Marques Brownlee after his explanation video on Pixel 2 XL color which contains various errors, he said he didn't have the time available for a talk, but that he could do emails.

Usually I prefer discussions with a more hands-on approach to teach color science applied to mobile due to the amount of complexity involved.

But eh why not!
Here is what I sent him, following a reaction style because this is about YouTube after all. I post this because I want to share the knowledge with you, my dear readers as well.

A very interesting read if nothing else.

A good find.

As said in the article, the XL2 doesn't meet the requirements for full sRGB as the reds are off in intensity and tone. sRGB looks fine and well on properly calibrated screens.

Supercurio and Erica used to be a couple a while back and that's probably why shes good at seeing screen defects etc. SC also did a lot of work on custom roms in the form of audio enhancements AFAIK.

All in all I wish Android would support wide colour gamut extensively as then we'd be getting the best out of OLED screens.

why does google hide srgb mode under developer options? That to me says google doesn't want people using it, unless this has been moved on the 2?
Back then it was probably a work in progress on the 6P and Pixel. But tbh who knows. People that wanted sRGB had the option at least.

I've had it enabled since day one on my Nexus 6P as I prefer it to how it was out of the box. Hopefully, the "dull" colours of the 2 XL will be the norm for me....

As an aside, has anyone seen or heard of any decent tempered glass screen protectors? The only one I have seen is by Zagg at $50 (bit pricey!), but is always out of stock. Not seen anything by Spigen or Mediadevil yet.

The camera is excellent on the OP5 imo. it has a pro mode that the pixel 2 devices dont

So the Pixel 2.

The clicking and high pitch frequency issue latest:

Hey all,

We are investigating a faint, low-frequency “clicking” or “ticking” noise that a small number of Pixel 2 users have reported. This clicking noise does not affect the performance of your device beyond the audible noise. If you find the noise bothersome, we suggest temporarily turning off NFC (used by apps like Android Pay) in Settings > Connected devices > NFC. We are investigating and will have a more definitive response soon.

No mention of the high pitched noise there. Few saying it won't be fixed and is a grounding issue. I noticed the HTC 10 had the same issue and was patched with a Software Update. So we shall see what the update brings.
