**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

It continues:

After multiple reports of possible screen burn-in on the Pixel 2 XL, we are pulling our score for this device until we have more information. We have reached out to Google, but as of this writing the company has only said that it's "investigating."

Since publishing our original review, our unit has developed ghostly versions of the main Android navigation buttons at the bottom, visible when you're looking at a gray background. Several other outlets have reported the same on their review units. That's potentially a telltale sign of screen burn in, which can affect any OLED screen over time — but usually that time is measured in months and years, not weeks. It's possible, however, that it's simply a temporary "image retention" and not a permanent issue.

...

Until we know one way or the other, we're temporarily removing our score on the Pixel 2 XL. In the meantime, we can't recommend buying this phone until we can definitively say that the screen isn't permanently damaging itself within weeks of buying it.

Pixel 2 XL’s pOLED display has a ‘black smear’ problem that’s definitely worse than average

On another note MKBHD gave more indepth than usual review.

The screen burn is a little more concerning than the blue tint as this is something I wouldn't be able to judge from an hour with the demo device. It will be interesting to see what Googles investigation concludes.

I do find myself wondering if they pulled them from sale, I wonder how quickly they could source an AMOLED screen and restart production would be? I'm guessing months and months?

According to some articles I have read, some Pixel 2 orders have been delayed by a few weeks (due to supply issues), and Google are giving those affected a free live case. If the Pixel 2 XL was delayed for months due to the screen issues, I wonder what form of "compensation" (if any!) they would give? Personally speaking, I'd just be happy for a non-defective screen!

His review makes me feel better and he is saying just what I've said, they've either had QC issues or a bad batch of early screens.

Here's hoping our units that are due the 15th November will be fine!

This, I find really annoying. They have a review unit, they claim screen burn and they could quite easily tell us if it is image retention or burn but don't. WHY?!

I take most reviews these days with a pinch of salt. When you own a phone and know it inside and out, then watch some of these "experts" reviews on them, you soon realise they have no idea what they are talking about.

Great review, now I REALLY want one :D

As mentioned yesterday following conversation with Google Customer Service rep, they estimate shipping to Google Play Store, EE and Carphone on 13 November. Not long to wait.

I expect my Panda 2 XL soon after 13 November. Carphone had a shorter waiting time than the Play Store so I opted to go with them this time. The Google Customer Service rep assured me that wherever I buy the phone from the three names above, there will be ample opportunity to return if any of these fore-mentioned issues actually materialise on their phones.

I estimate that 90%+ of Pixel buyers will never notice the issues (if they were to exist) that we tech geeks discuss at length here.

Ahem. Display panel issues with the Apple iPhone X? Check out the latest rumours.

Apple's iPhone X shipments may only be half what was expected--Nikkei

Apple's iPhone X shipments may only be half what was expected--Nikkei....a report in Japan's Nikkei newspaper that iPhone X shipments will only total above half what was expected this year. Shipments are expected to total around 20 million units, the Nikkei report said, as Apple has struggled to solve technical issues with components supporting the new face authentication feature.

The problem was that at the beginning of mass production, there were defects in the bonding process for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, the Nikkei reported. Although the problem was largely resolved around July, manufacturers were only above to improve the "first pass yield," or the number of good units, toward the end of September, the report said. Apple is believed to have started negotiations with other manufacturers over additional production of certain parts, the Nikkei reported."

I wonder if these negotiations include LG? If so there will be pressure on Google trying to secure next run Pixel unit display screens.

Word to the wise Pixel 2 buyer: get your order in early to avoid disappointment. I have said this all along.

If the screen burn is not an issue mainstream then the XL 2 for me looks like phone of the year

Large bezels, design is not symmetrical, no wireless charging, inferior water resistance (to Sony and Samsung), inferior display, only 4GB of RAM (6GB should be the minimum now), no audio jack.

On the plus side it does have stereo speakers, a large battery and a good camera, but for the price their asking for that's not enough imo.

I had high hopes for this phone, but these specs are not even remotely tempting.

OK, Google.
