**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

I've just discovered sRGB on my Pixel XL and I'm preferring it.

I find on the Pixel (and was the same on my S6 Edge+) that the sRGB mode is excellent for videos but I just find that for general usage the colours are very flat. But for videos it's great as to my eyes when in the more vivid mode the gamma is out of whack and there's a lot of crushing in black tones, sRGB takes care of this.

Forgot I'd switched to sRGB on the PXL1... felt weird switching it off again the other day!

P2 incoming, dropped down from XL size because sausage fingers and I don't mind the design/form factor of the standard P2.

So far I'm loving the pixel 2.wishing the screen was a little bigger (not too fussed about the bezels). Coming from a 5x it's super fast. Not had too much chance to put the camera through its paces yet but the photos I've done are very impressive. Feel like I'll get a decent case and a screen protector (seems like a lack of atm).

I'm tempted to go look at both the P2 and PXL2 today. My 5X is being replaced by Google even after the warranty expired and giving me another two year warranty on top for the replacement but as others are reporting of replacements going into boot loop too, I'm starting to wonder if I should switch and sell the 5X on.

Interesting article....

How Oreo's color profiles work on the Pixel 2 and 2 XL

With the Pixel 2's release, it seems many Android fans have their pitchforks in-hand, and it's the display that's the target of their criticism. Owners of the 2 XL have noticed color shifting at an angle or laggy pixel response, which causes a "jelly-like" effect. Another complaint, which will be the focus on this article, is what some have called "muted colors." At first glance, it seems like the Pixel 2 isn’t capable of showing as many colors as other OLED devices, but this isn’t true—the colors are intentionally “muted” and locked via software. But what does that mean, and more importantly, can we change it?

Interesting stat mentioned today on TV: Pixel 2 pre orders double what they were on Pixel 1.

This is despite the comments about the display screen problems!

Yeah because a lot of the issues are from fandoms. None of the big 4 reviews have said anything other than a blue tint on certain viewing angles.

OK, so here is Google's official comment on the 2 XL display concerns and a promise to fix the "clicking noise" on the 2 (a software bug on the NFC functionality, according to Google).

"We’ve received some feedback about the Pixel 2 XL displays not appearing as saturated as other phones. We attribute this perception to our choice to calibrate the Pixel 2 XL for delivering natural, accurate colors, taking advantage of the new color management support in Android 8.0 Oreo.
........
Based on the feedback we’ve received since announcing Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, we learned that some users do want even more vibrant colors. So, through a software update to Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, we will soon be adding a new “saturated” color mode."

And regarding the "burn-in" effect, they say:

"We’ve received reports of Pixel 2 XL devices exhibiting image retention on the screen and have been actively investigating them. Extensive testing of the Pixel 2 XL display show that its decay characteristics are comparable to OLED panels used in other premium smartphones."

Yet they are making two changes to the way the screen works:
1. The nav bar buttons at the bottom of the screen will fade out when not in use, and
2. They’re dropping the display’s maximum brightness by 50 nits — an amount they say is “almost undetectable”, but that should reduce strain on the display “significantly.”

And of particular note, they are extending the warranty on all Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL's from 1 year to 2 years!

Seems to me Google is telling you they are serious about their long term commitment to their hardware business.

Increasing warranty from 1 to 2 years tells me they have no confidence in the hardware & that it is indeed a problem.

But hey its okay there is no problem hand over your £800 for a substandard screen.

How do you figure that? To me it says they're confident in the screen. If they weren't, extending the warranty is going to cost them big bucks.

When you saw car companies giving lifetime warranties, did you instantly think 'Wow, are they that unreliable?' No, you only do that if you're confident in your product.
