**** The Official Google Pixel 4 Thread ****

I saw something about this on Reddit and don't get it? It measures as high as other devices, when on manual brightness. I've not had any issues with screen brightness. Anyone with a Pixel 4 experienced issues?
It's bright enough for me, used mostly indoors. Don't think it's as bright as some others though. It's just being used as another thing to beat the pixel with imo. People moan about the forehead but would also criticise a notch. Seems Google can't win sometimes.

There are acceptable solutions to difficult problems and there are solutions which don't work at all. Notches are bad, a massive forehead is worse. That's my opinion. I think the Pixel 4 is uglier than most other current phones. If they'd gone with an iPhone-sized notch, the device would have looked better. If they'd made the bezels top and bottom the same thickness it would have also looked better.

Then don't buy it, there are other options. I like the look of it. It feels great in the hand and the software experience is much better than anything else on Android I've ever used. I think the top bezel is much better than the iPhone notch and give me the bezel over any motorized camera. I think the best looking one so far has been the hole punch design but then you miss out on all the other sensors for face id etc.

I don't mind the forehead either. I've stared at my Pixel 2 XL's bezel for the last 2 years so I don't find it at all offensive. I have been using an iPhone for the last few weeks and in my mind the notch is worse, but tbh, I think people get way too upset about stuff like this. My main wish is that banks had supported the FaceID out of the box, rather than the situation we now find ourselves where some banks are outright refusing to support it (TSB), and others are probably going to take months to implement any support; typing in passwords again isn't the end of the world but is inconvenient. I do think they dropped a nut not having the fingerprint there for redundancy, even if I wasn't the biggest fan of it overall.

Isn't this down to Google's wishy-washy approach to its app store? They could solve the problem by taking down every banking app that doesn't support their implementation of FaceID. Or they could have maybe, just maybe, ironed out these problems months ago before the hardware was implemented and released to consumers. It's a terrible experience.

Taking down all the apps certainly is an Apple like action. Yes, it would probably get a response from the banks to 'fix it', but I'm not sure I'm in favor of that approach. What happens if they start removing my apps because I don't use a feature they want me to use...?

Apple made it happen, Google did not - that's the difference. I could be wrong but I don't recall Apple having to take down any bank apps and they all work fine with FaceID. If you're going to release new hardware, at least make sure it's going to be supported. Especially in Google's case when they have the power to make it happen, assuming the will is there.

I don't understand what was wrong with a fingerprint reader? Part of me honestly thinks Google couldn't, or wouldn't, implement an in screen one and took the easy way out. And leading on from that I wouldn't be surprised that Google shoved the sensors in at the top because again they couldn't, or wouldn't, develop a full screen display so again took the easy way out by using a massive forehead and then shouting "Oh but look what's inside it!"

So you think they put motion sense and proper face unlock into the phone cause they couldn't be bothered making a full screen display? :D And people claiming "it's a terrible experience" when they don't even own the phone. Give me a break. You can use a password manager for most apps that don't support face id, and my banking app has a 4 digit PIN code. Hardly end of the world.

To get clear, I'm not saying Apple did have to, it's just the type of move they might make and in glad Google don't/didn't.

Then, does it surprise you that a new iPhone had more weight behind it than a new Pixel when it comes to backs upsetting their apps?

I'm definitely preferring face unlock over in screen finger print reader. Rear mounted FPS or face unlock, hmm, I wouldn't be bothered one over the other tbh. I think I would kiss face unlock it I went back to FPS. I know I did when I left the Mate 20 Pro.

Some stupid points and why use a finger print reader when facelock works 100% of the time. Fingerprint readers as anyone will know are not 100%

I dont think a password manager would work with my banking apps as they tend to use things like “give me the 2nd, 5th and 10th password character followed by a memorable answer” kind of thing...

Yes its not the end of the world, but it looks distinctly primitive compared with the same experience on an Apple device.

Knowing what the phone is capable of, but not being able to use it is frustrating, and I’m a big proponent of buying something for what it can do today, not what it *might* be able to do tomorrow, IYSWIM...

i don't understand why they didn't put in both. finger print reader on the back and face unlock on the front. can disable one if you don't like it. gives 2 options to get into your phone securly, means all apps requiring finger print reader still work.

i get why apple can get banks to quickly implement faceid but google can't for pixels. i am sure if you saw the numbers, pixel sales are terrible in comparison to apple. it's a numbers game. pixel lose in that respect.

True. It's so good you don't even have to open your eyes :p.
The fps have been secure enough up to this point. I remember when I had my 6T the in display scanner was just new on the market and it took a couple of months for the HSBC app to accept the OnePlus as a secure device. No issues with OnePlus devices since.

Indeed, it was madness not to at least include the option of both for redundancy if nothing else... although it would have no doubt pushed the price up even further.

Agreed as well, Pixels are very rare phones to see the in the wild. I’ve said it before, but it’ll take Samsung to enter the game with FaceID until Android devices are taken seriously (which luckily they’re rumoured to be doing).

It's good it works with eyes shut. As I am always half asleep until midday. Also I have no trust issues with my wife

See I remember the 6T in display scanner... It was not that reliable ... The face unlock works all the time. With hats, headsets and sunglasses.
