***The Official Guitar Thread***

Well be playing around with edge of breakup sound. Clear but gives way to breakup..

Not bad as a sound but I don't think it's going to get that almost fed back sound without the neighbours being away :D

Mrs has said she will get me a setup course for my birthday, so that's going to be good. \m/

I've also been eyeing up what changes I want to make to the guitar - reducing it's 5.8Kg down a little and reshaping the neck a tad, reducing some mass on the head etc and sliming the body depth whilst I was at it. It just means I have to take all of the hardware off. If I'm doing that I may as well also (a) sort out the neck ups fret flatness and redo the frets, (b) sort out the rear socket mistake and (c) reshape the body.

Nobody will be bothered but I'm going through a bit of depression at the moment.
I've been constantly gigging for 54 years, from the age of 12 to 66.
On June 28th my band split up on stage, we held it together until the last song but went our separate ways :(
Since that day I haven't picked up a musical instrument and don't know if I want to.
At 66 the chances of me getting in another band is slim but do I really want to play to mostly unappreciative people anyway?
This is the only life I've known and the rug has been pulled away from me.
Sorry, just feeling sorry for myself at the moment.

You know what you need to do, start your own YouTube channel. I am semi serious.

Even just playing, no talking. You don't even need to show your face. Just the arms and guitar. Pick a song, get a backing track and play 1 song, upload 1 video a week.

A guy at work basically decided that he’s play in an online/older member band. He plays bass and that allows him to balance his commitments with grandkids etc

This is a great idea. I'm sure you've got enough of a repertoire you could do demos of the way you arrange stuff @SexyGreyFox

I'm sorry to hear that mate. As Raymond say, start a YouTube channel. I'd be interested in hearing you play or sharing tips and stories from your life giging.

Plenty of us will be bothered and never be worried about sharing things that are happening in life good or bad! It’s much better for you to be open!

I think the YouTube channel might be a great idea and outlet for you, I’ve always enjoyed your posts talking about the reality of being in a gigging band and sharing hints and tips. Plenty of people would like to hear what you have to offer and listen to you play.

Raymond Lin can make a guest appearance doing a tour of his high end guitar collection and an hour long special on his pedal board! (We’d all watch it)

Oh and form an oasis covers act, going to be plenty of opportunities next year for anyone half decent!

I also have a nod to finish off the amp too given it shouldn't be too expensive (and glue sets better when it's not freezing outside). I'd delayed the sorting of this as I felt the job wasn't secure.. sure enough I got the boot so I'm looking for jobs.

With that in mind, rather than get enthusiastic on adding lots of mods I'm going to finish it with some cheaper additions:

1. Finish the cab - tolex, grill cloth and screws. I have old pine that I can reuse. It will be safe to move around (currently the baffle is held in by friction!). I'll also put a grill vent in the top and two handles.
2. Safety - currently I have 450V caps but I should really have 500V as the B+ can, in theory, exceed the cap rating during startup on solid state.
3. Front panel switch to bypass a fixed 43% attenuator I put in front of the LTP. It's not there in rob's design so a switch to bypass it will be nice to allow me to switch to getting output transformer overdrive. a 70p switch so it's not going to break the bank. This is needed for further bluesy breakup/clean volume.
4. 1/4" plug for the speaker.
5. Fix presence pot (currently the wrong value).
6. Bias pots and test points for the EF80s. This means I can test and adjust the bias of the output tubes.

At a later stage:
1. speaker reactive attenuator - to drop the sound levels when maxed on the volume and provide a DI output
2. SS/Tube rectification switch - this will allow me to switch between tube and solid state rectification which allows older sounding sag.
3. 240/230V primary switch for more B+ but this means I need to dynamically change the voltage to the heaters at the same time.

I'm booked onto the guitar setup course for my birthday so I'm looking forward to that.

So bits ordered for the amp to finish it, well finish it to a good level.

So this will have:
* Royal blue, with blues breaker reissue grill cloth. With white and gold piping.
* Switchable tube/solid state rectification - it will add an additional 47uF when it uses solid state to help reduce the flub at the low end. Replacement 500V caps for the 450V caps.
* anti-pop snubber cap+resistor for HV switching
* Jack insulators to replace the electrical tape currently used on the jacks
* correct for the presence pot + 4k7 resistor
* switches for the simple bypass mods - bypass attenuation and bypass tone stack.
* resistors to make a cheap 10% jack given I play at about 71dB max this will allow me to play at higher volumes without being louder.
* full bits to finish off the cab itself, speaker screws, corners, handles, mesh etc I have some feet already.

I might get back into recording.
Between 1970 to 1988 I was a prolific song writer and recorded using various machines I had during that time:
AKAI Reel to Reel, Portastudio 144, Fostex A8, Atari ST with Cakewalk . PC with Cakewalk Sonar.
After 1988 I had nothing to say but did write one song for an Overclockers project somebody posted about in 2006.
The only things I did after that was for people requesting covers for me to do them in the style they asked for and then I got bored.

Here's the Laughing Gnome from 2012 with 46K views :)

Somebody asked for Personal Jesus which I was quite proud of when I finished
