***The Official Guitar Thread***

Am I the only muppet who seems to spend half his guitar life unwinding straps? Something about my putting on/off technique is really, really good at introducing a twist every time, and when I try to unwind the strap, I often make it worse before I make it... even worse... then better, then worse, then... oh, I give up!

Is there such a thing as guitar dyslexia, and can I claim benefits for it to put towards my next guitar? :D

Today I managed to crack on with the amp, I'm hoping to have the amp completed this weekend. There's a new vent in the top you can't really see but I've added the baffle supports, and the handle reinforcement is currently glueing in.

I've basically mounted the hardware (new switches), desoldered the old caps etc, I'm now clearing up the old rush job by shortening wires etc. It's not too far off being completed, probably tomorrow and it will be operational again.

The cab needs some front baffle bits made and stuck on, and I should then be in a position to start sticking tolex to it and fit the grill cloth.

Well sadly advancing age and arthritis - plus the fact I haven't picked up a guitar for the last couple of years - means I should sell my gear. Better it should go to someone who can make use of it but where to sell it? I've thought of ebay but the fees they charge grind.. One of my amps I've had for >50 years and still in great nick, some pics are here: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjBHd1Z . That amp is also featured on the VintageHofner website under the Selmer Zodiac Twin 30 Croc section. Maybe one for a collector - be a shame to gig with it and have it get banged up. Anyway looking at options right now.

You get the most selling it privately, so I would start from forums like TheFretboard, you can also sell it directly to a store. GuitarGuitar, Peach, Andertons, all of them have a used gear section. However, they might not go for the more niche brands. The going rate seem to be whatever they would list it themselves, they give you half just over. And if you sell it privately, you would get around 66% of the difference.

OF course there is also eBay, Reverb and Facebook marketplace.

edit - some store will sell it for commission for you, like Coda.

That's got old G12s in - I would say it's worth a decent amount as it's in tidy condition.

Well today I've basically finished the glueing, cutting and fitting of bolts etc. I've also put resprayed the front baffle now it has the grill standoffs glued in. The paint is drying and the final bit of the gluing is sat clamped up. In short I'm ready for doing the tolex and grill cloth tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that :( one of my biggest fears is not being able to play anymore. Wow that double cut in the pics is beautiful!!!

Sort of stolen styling from the 1961 Marshall Bluesbreaker but without the heft of a 2x12.

Happy with it so far just need to finish rewiring the amp (some improvements) then it can all go back in.

Just playing around with some cleaner blues (yep a hidden sunshine of my love), this has the async hard clipping diodes switched in running adding some harmonic content (akin to the Boss OD-1 overdrive pedal) but the diodes are very subtle at lower volume:

I need to play around more, needs more screaming distortion but this is just on the edge of breakup.

Quite a smooth full sound. Perhaps a modern leaning voicing? Very pleasant.

I'm surprised how adaptable the amp is. It can do low gain clean, into breakup with a tube softness (using tube rectifier) and then a couple of switches it can do solid state rectified high gain aggression. This was the guitar with the volume turned down (but due to my dodgy wiring this also reduces treble), normal gain and the symmetric clipping added which I think is adding even harmonic distortion. The G12M-65 creamback is warmish sounding anyway (less harsh highs) and the oversized cab helps keep it sounding rounded I think.

I just need the neighbours to be out and I can give it the cat-and-nine-tails for an afternoon to test the louder volume and attach the scope/spectrum analyser too to see if the diodes are doing something or if it's just me wishing :D

I still need to add the attenuator resistors but for now I wanted to just play. I've got some more mods I want to add and order parts for. :D

This was me first playing with the all the new switches :D It's long but the 'asymmetrical' approx 2:07 gives a nice tone, and it in the video it shows how aggressive it can sound. The interest bit is going solid state to tube at the end 09:08-09:20 you can hear the difference between the two rectifications - this occurs slowly rather than immediately on the switch but you can hear the clarity change and become warmer and fuzzier.

What isn't shown is the 230V primary setting (increasing the voltages 5% to the tubes etc).. that's a marked increase in clarity of distortion, it's harder sounding and it wants your mother too. Only issue is the heaters are running at 7V so I need to add a small dropper resistor to reduce the voltage by about 0.4V..

That's all above my head. But it's a lovely looking amp and sounds great. I've never really got beyond practise amps and 200~400 guitars.

In my youth I had a 70s marshall tube 2x12 combo that wouldn't distort, and I used to run it with a power soak and a distortion pedal trying to sound like EVH. Which I never did.

In recent years I've liked the sound of those simple epiphone valve amps. Things like that.

Yeah, people chase “tone” but there’s so many variables including how loud they are played and how they are recorded.

Takes a lot to beat a single ended (one output valve) fender amp. The sound is warmer and clear until it’s not on the volume dial.

I just wanted an amp I can tweak to my desired sound - be it blues, rock, 80s metal or modern prog.

New amp arrived today. So pleased, this thing is great and a nice upgrade over my old Blackstar ID:Core 100.

Laney Foundry dualtop head and the 2x12" vertical matching cab. I think it looks great as well.

Can't wait to pick up my new guitar on Saturday to go with it. Schecter Reaper-6.

Knowledgeable folk. I quite often like to record little bits of guitar and record vids etc. Just personal and share with friends etc. I've just been using my phone which is terrible. If I wanted to move up a level, what is involved?

My Laney has DI out on the rear with cab emulation. So would I just use an XLR cable and connect from that, to say either a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4th Gen or 2i2 4th Gen (XLR input on the rear)? I was confused how to then get that to the PC, does it just work via USB-C and comes bundled with software?

Cheers.
