You can only really apply synergies retroactively in Arena drafts. Picking 1 card while hoping for another isn't a good idea.
I know this might sound odd but as long as you have a decent mana curve winning in Arena is mostly about how you play the cards you have rather than what the cards actually are.
Having lots of low cost minions is good for regaining tempo and swarming your opponent. Taunt is better in Arena. Set plays/cards your opponent would use in constructed won't be present so you can take more risks, etc.

Plus some of the best cards (in terms of value) in the game aren't the hero specific ones

i think my problem is i look more to defend myself rather than attack .
i tend to pick quite a few taunts and also minions with divine shield as in my eyes it takes 2 attempts to kill them.
i also have this strange addiciton with alarm-o-bot in the hope i pull it early and have a nice big card in my deck that it will choose lol
i will keep reading hearthstone forums but any tips on rubbish cards will help or decent cards
Probably where you are going wrong. Alarm-o-bot is pretty bad, and so are the majority of taunts. They are useful in certain decks but I run the majority of mine with 0 taunts, on the off chance I do have taunts they are argus/sunfury. Watch some streams on twitch.tv, they will help a lot.
I think my friends hate me now... they seem to have literally the worst pack luck... i was on skype with them, i finished a quest and had enough gold to buy a pack, i said lets see what i get, they both joked about how i'd get five Tirions haha, i started joking how i'd get atleast one legendary, i hovered over the cards and there was a legendary... i literally couldn't stop laughing, i clicked it and got a gold Ysera hahahahaha.
I already had Ysera normal, so im definetly going to keep her, i totally forgot the dream cards will be gold, now i'm even more excited!

That first game you completely destroyed me, you had a perfect start, i think i won the next game as miracle, then you beat me again?
We should do some form of OCUK tournament ladder or something, could be fun, not sure if we'd get the numbers though.

Must admit though, as much as i do like the game i am getting a bit tired of coming up against decks in ranked which seem to have nothing but legendarys. Takes the fun out as the chances of me winning with my 1 measly hogger are extremely small and in fact i dont think i ever have beaten anyone thats got that many.
Played one last night and managed to get rid of about 4 different legendaries but the 5th was just too much.
I mean ive opened my fair share of packs through arena but only ever got Hogger.

It was pretty even in the end IIRC and we both have good collections. I look forward to more
Have you tried playing Random Blind Mirror Matches? Both players pick the same class, create a new deck, don't pick any cards, exit & get CPU to auto fill in the deck for you while you look away. Both players have random decks with no idea what cards they have. It's fun
With all the iPad news out and about I didn't realise that HS already has over 10 million player accounts! With all phones and tablets by the end of the year how many will that turn into? 15m, 20m? Crazy numbers.
Legendary drop rate is about 1 in 21 packs. Does that sound consistent with your results?

Could well be actually. Ive opened about 10 just in the last week as i got a bit frustrated and wanted some legendarys but other than that ive only ever saved gold for Arena which is obviously a lot slower so could well be about 40 overall since i started.

Yeah a lot of numbers, looking good for the future of the game.
Legendarys don't mean you can instantly win, a lot of the basic cards are really strong, chilwind yet, boulderfist ogre etc, i know trump is an excellent player but his free to play decks show that you don't really need them to get higher.
I think my rate is much higher than this haha.

it'll even out and you'll go 40 packs with nothing but commons soon. Law of averages etc.But yeah the general rate per pack is about 5% legendary, 20% epic and about 40% chance of a second rare.

played around with a mage burst deck last night, was really fun, you play stranglethorn tiger and raveholdt assasin, then the turn after that you can really burst them down, frost bolt ice lane, icelance then they are chunked
, leeroy fireblast next turn if possible!Obviously it is very situational, you have the poly morphs to by pass the taunts which is good, haven't lost with it yet.
I've not played this in weeks, I do miss it, but with my novelty bad decks and lack of experience I got roshambo'd a lot! 
Still, when its out on the iPad it'll be very appealing to get back into and be able to play around the house!

They might be strong but they still dont compare to a lot of the legendarys that are available.
It may well be my skill level but there is very little i can do when each turn they flip over a different legendary. I only have so many removal cards at my disposal.
One of the hardest was Jarraxus...had the game in the bag then he pulls him out and spawn 6/6 creatures every turn and a weapon to boot.
Dont get me wrong its far from every game, and all the other i enjoy, i just dont enjoy feeling that the games decided before its even started if he has a host of specific cards.
Might have to just keep buying card packs with gold instead of arena for a change.
