The issue is that they seem incredibly over-tuned and would easily be a 10 on the difficulty scale. Out of around 30 games I have won a grand total of zero. Each time I appear to be doing well it feels as though the AI cheats and suddenly starts pulling out incredibly powerful cards which decimate me in just a few rounds.
Perhaps playing against players would be a different story but the issue is that in order to do that with your preferred deck, you must compete in and win the practice match against the AI...
You must be doing something seriously wrong to be doing that badly against the AI. The game seems simple but it can also be very intricate in it's mechanics. Are you holding cards back? Always going for the opponents face? If you don't control the board you won't win. Think carefully and weigh up the value of each play. Don't underestimate the basic decks as they contain 75% of the best cards anyway and have no problem smashing the AI on Expert.
HS is my first TCG/CCG. I've been playing for 5 days now, haven't spent any money, have only crafted 2 or 3 cards (which I barely use) and I mostly play ranked (grinding for gold) and had no problem getting to Diamond League with a couple of basic decks.
