***The Official HP TouchPad Thread***

same here, and tbh I'm not sure how I'd feel about them doing that, it was exactly this which they got thrashed by governments for.:(

I thought it was because the devices on the google cars were recording all network activity i.e. picking up people that were using open wifi networks (open as in no encryption)

But even if Google only recorded SSID's and MAC's, which I believe they are no longer even allowed to do, won't that mean that the Google Location Services (which the TouchPad relies on) will become less accurate over time?

Which is why I originally asked about getting external GPS sources to the TouchPad

Android devices with GPS will report nearby SSID/MAC and GPS coordinates to the google database (if you enable location services)

On the precentral forum some people have been using external GPS receivers with their TPs. When CM get android running on the TP, it may be possible to use another android device as the GPS provider for the TP.

It's quite simple really, the first letter of the 'cake' tells you if it is newer. ie. Gingerbread beginning with a G is after Froyo with an F.
Gotcha, thanks. I've heard of Eclair also, but I guess that's quite an old version.

Also one more question about Android, does Gingerbread support hardware gfx acceleration and will that be on the Touchpad port or is this one of those things that is yet to be sorted?

EDIT: I think the google wifi triangulation also picks up SSID's of encrypted networks as well as open ones.

I am telling ya it must have, because it picks me up no matter where i am do to the correct building or street.

And dont say it uses wireless, because where i work it would have no hope in hell knowing were the building is.

Then you can tell all of us which GPS subscibtion you have, as it's not free. Technically, GPS on a phone is covered by your data allowance, but as the Touchpad has no SIM or phone capability, there is no way GPS data can pick up the touchpad. Sorry.

I don't think you understand how GPS works. Nothing to do with Sim cards or phones.Sorry.

Lots of GPS devices on the market without any phone component. Hey, look at TomTom devices.

I guess I'd better chuck my Tomtom out then.

here's a very simple and reasonable explanation. your work colleague goes to work with his android mobile, he has wifi and gps on at same time. the android phone records the wifi network connected and the exact gps location on the google service.

now you use your touchpad to use a google service which looks to get your location. from the android mobile google know that yesterday (or even in the last couple hours) that network was in xxx location because the colleagues mobile said so. this then tells your touchpad this is where we think you are based on 2 hours ago this network was there.
