***The Official HP TouchPad Thread***

Was your TomTom free? Is it free to continually update it? No, you pay a GPS subscription to someone either through the initial cost, or contined purchased updates. Obtainting a signal from a satellite and using it's data is only free with FreeSat TV :) (although you have to pay for the kit)

Oh dear. :)

Go away, read that how stuff works page and then come back with some kind of excuse about how we 'misunderstood' what you meant. You've already gone from 'you need a data signal for GPS' to 'you need to pay for GPS' so we'll see how you change it next. ;)

Well done, you've covered the topic of how GPS works, I'm not sure that was ever a concern though. Your article still fails to mention how, at someones expense, that data ends up at your device.

Take the SIM card out of your phone, restart it turn on GPS and then launch navigation. Have fun waiting for a signal :)

No I haven't, a Data signal (ie 3g, or cellualr) so that your GPS data can be charged accordingly. Otherwise, I would happily use GPS abroad, and not have to worry about the associated costs, as it shouldn't cost me anything. Right?

Can't be bothered about Android to be honest, not many apps for tablets anyway. And functionally not as good either.

webOS 3.0.3 is on the horizon anyway. Lots of performance fixes apparently too, makes a stock 3.0.3 faster than a 1.7ghz OC 3.0.2!!!

You mean like I do with navigation devices all the time? I think your confusion is that you are thinking of navigation software which doesn't have the maps preloaded (which is NOTHING to do with a GPS signal). If you download navigation software to your phone/pad with the relevant preloaded maps then it will work abroad, and I've done it loads. You do not need a data connection to use GPS and GPS doesn't cost anything to use, period. You are wrong.

I think you may be getting confused about the quick fix feature on most GPS receivers, these do use a data connection to download the current location of GPS satellites to speed up the process of getting your location.

Without this data connection the receiver scans the entire sky for GPS radio signals, rather than just starting with the places where it knows satellites are.

The data ends up at my device in much the same way FM radio data ends up in my radio, expect its paid for by the US military

A much better answer, thanks

How is it 'better' or are you just trolling? We both described two completely different things equally as valid which could have explained how you got it so wrong.

I suggest in future before trying to make people look stupid with phrases like "Oh dear Lord, LOL!" you make sure you have your facts right or you'll end up looking the silly one. :)

Anyway, back to the adults conversation - I've noticed the touch screen bug on Android is every time you wake the screen up after a long pause, you have to then turn it on and off again for the touch screen to work. Slightly annoying but not a show stopper.

If anyone has any apps they want me to test before they take the plunge let me know.

That "Oh dear Lord, LOL!" comment was in relation to Google Maps, not GPS ;)

Angry birds please :)

Also can you load a h264 720p clip on it, without re-encoding and see how that plays? I don't know which app to use for that as on my SGS2 the native player plays it.

Finally, how long did it take you to install CM7 on the TP and how much useable space do you see in file manager?

I've had very few android apps work without force closing. I guess there hasn't been a significant release since the alpha one at the end of August?

In fact, I have just read that 3.0.4 is going to be deployed within the next few days.

Mentioned it before, but the google books app (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.books&feature=search_result) does it do two-page view in landscape (there's a selection of free books available)

Not that it's going to affect whether I install android or not, that will be happening this evening :p

Angry birds:

I'm copying over a 720p film at the moment so will let you know shortly how that goes. I use Moboplayer which I also use on my SGS2.

It took literally 5 minutes or so to download everything to install (ROM, clockworkmod, novacom etc.) and then you type in one command and everything is done a few minutes later. Very very simple! It's showing 25gb as total space, I have a 32gb Touchpad.

We're talking about Cyanagenmod 7 which the Alpha was released today, it seems to work pretty much perfectly (the only bug I've run into being the touch screen wake one).
