***The Official HP TouchPad Thread***

Does anyone know if you can use any bluetooth keyboard? or does it have to be the HP one?

I tried using a logitech one and it did not find it :(
But some said in a previous thread their apple KB was working. So it seems 'some' work.

Guys...here's a question, now I know a lot of you obviously got this at the cheaper price but what would you be willing to pay for it?

I do want a tablet and have faith in the web community on this one and since they can be had for £199 would anyone say that it's worth that even considering the price they went at recently?
TBH i would still have bought one at £199 and I am sure many others would too.

In some ways webos has just been giving a massive market over night, so I suspect it will get better.
With the bounty so high for an Android port too, i guess that is only a matter of time too.

I can only speak for myself but I would not have been happy paying £200 for it. I was ok risking £90 simply for the potential, but I was still expecting something better than what I received considering the original retail price.

Other people seem happier, but I find the performance and limitations really quite frustrating - I can't even edit documents. Web browsing and video are about the only thing I find particularly useable at moment, and those are not without issue.

I would be happy to pay £250-300 for it, I've completely stopped using my laptop now and use the tablet for everything, finding out whats going on in the news to checking emails.

I still use my computer for playing games, but when I'm watching TV or sitting on the train, the tablet is brilliant.

I would like this to be the case, as I do like the webos UI. But once the firesale is over it's a dying market with 0% further growth possible and that isn't much incentive for developers to support it. From now on there will only be less potential customers each month and never more, as over time people will move on to iOS/Android/Windows and no new webos devices are sold. If I were a developer I'd certainly be focusing my attention on a market that will continue to grow.

Short term there may be a boost though.

is the reason you cant edit documents due to the software not being there on the tablet or ??

I believe I read somewhere that HP are going to update their Office APP with the next update to allow editing of Office files.

Myself, I'm very impressed with what a fully patched and clocked Touchpad can do, but then I use it soley for entertainment and not productivity.

Oh, and although the App store isn't as big as Apple or Androids, it is still far more comprehensive than I had expected. Unfortunately it still suffers from the multiple similar apps and 90% of them being gash, but then so does Apple & Android!

So far:
Love - the web browser, OS, email, and it is by far #1 for social networking imo.

Hate - that you need to patch and clock it yourself.

WebOS is now being licenced to other hardware manufacturers, so further hardware is very likely as it is a good and cheap OS. HP have also stated that they intend to fully support the OS, at least in the short to medium term, as they see licencing as an alternative strategy to recover their initial investment in Palm.

The Quickoffice update to allow editing should have been out Friday so expect it early next week. It's been confirmed that its late rather than scrapped.

HP are trying to license it to others. If someone actually does license it then maybe that will change things (depending on who and what they actually do with it), but until then I'm not going to expect much.

In regards to HP saying they will fully support it, HP have said a lot of things in the past. If they don't get any interest in licensing then we'll see how far that support goes.

We can live in hope though.

1. Its £6 here!
2. Does it definitely get rid of the licence check? My parents are going on holiday next week and I need to sort out films for them. They won't be best pleased if they get on the plane and can't watch any films!

Can anyone confirm that the paid for kalemsoft version doesn't need a connection to check for the licence.:)

So I have been using my touchpad for the last couple of days and here are a few intial "findings".

Even with the Preware fixes it still seems to freeze every now and then, just for a few seconds when scrolling down webpages every now and then. The text display isn't brilliant either, not sure if that's due to the resolution or the rendering the touchpad uses but coming from my Omnia 7 and Windows 7 web browsing just doesn't seem as fluid. The only positives (and true they are large positives) are the extra screen size and jump in resolution alongside the ability to play flash, compare to the phone at least.

I do prefer the fluidness and rendering of WP7 to the touchpad though, WP7 just seens far more finished. On the other hand the cards and gestures that go with them (and multitasking) is a step up from WP7 NoDo and looks like it will still lead when Mango properly hits (although MS are using a similar card system). I love the proper multitasking you can do on it.

The screen is beautiful, in many ways at least. I was using the facebook app last night to browse some photos and it was stunning. However I can't get over the low resolution. Yes it is higher than my phone (and most Android phones at 480x800) but for a 10" screen it just seems rather low. It also has an annoying yellow colour cast if the brightness is a bit low, same with the blacks not being proper blacks (but then I am spoiled by SAMOLED). Overall the screen is almost as nice colour wise as my desktop though, just a shame you can't calibrate it properly.

I'm also getting a little bored of the boring dark grey in things like the app draw and the style in general. I can't put my finger on it but it has a lot of the same issues Android has styling wise, again not really comparing to WP7 (but then I think I love bright contrasty colours rather than more muted tones).

Also I've just typed this post on my laptop and aside from it being slightly warmer and a bit more awkward to rest on my legs it reminds me so much of why I've never been interested in tablets before... It was so much easier to navigate to this page, read it and then reply... I don't necessarliy regret getting it but I'm very glad I didn't pay full price for it (and that goes for all mobile OS tablets). When I get the money to replace this laptop with something thinner (like a Series 9 or Air) with better battery life and generally cooler running (this is a 4 year old 13" XPS) I think the touchpad would be relegated to plane trips and quick grab uses.

Can't be many manufacturers left that aren't already using Android, and will manufacturers really swap to webOS when ICS is around the corner?

The main positive for a lot of manufacturers about Android is the number of applications.

A manufacturer with a different product will find it much easier to stand out in the crowd of almost identical phones. There are issues with WebOS certainly but if a manufacturer could get it to run Android apps natively/ alomst natively (such as BB are doing) then maybe they can stand out from the crowd.

Tempted to overclock this bad boy but i don't want the thing i have spent hours trying to get to turn into a £115 brick.

Are there any real risks doing this or will it just downclock if it overheats/becomes unstable?

Also. Is Webosdoctor already on the touchpad or do you have to install it? Or is it actually a PC app that you use when the touchpad is connected?
