Use Handcent SMS. That is one of the major points I like about Android. If a stock app doesn't do what you want, go to the Market and get one that does.
Seconded - Handcent is a most excellent app.

Erm, anyone else getting obscene images on this Desire review by GSMArena?
Just thought I'd read it again now the phones coming this week and it looks like its been hacked? Or my PC has some malware!

Reading what?
The last point is really interesting, if Murtazin's predictions of an October release for the firmware update are actually true. Android 2.2 (Froyo) has only just been released by Google, but most manufacturers and operators are yet to push it through themselves—it's believed HTC for example won't hit the trigger button until October.
Testing the official HTC Froyo for Desire next week. So it should be available for OTA within the next 2 months
Well as a Desire user I dont exactly appreciate waiting myself - but it could be worse, imagine you still got 1.6 ( Sony Ericsson anyone? )
2 months sounds a reasonable amount of time if it's just gone out for testing, I'd prefer it was tested properly than just rushed out.
Htc haven't released froyo officially...a stock desire has 2.1 installed
1.6?
*gets beating stick*
I was weirded out when I used a HTC Magic belonging to my uncle, I had to wonder if the phone was broken it was so slow in comparison heh!
Well I'm on OpenDesire again now and I'm sticking with it as the browser features Sense has are now in it too and then there's loads more features too
Can anybody tell me if it is possible to root my desire if I've accepted the OTA update to 2.2?
Where did you get them from?
Of course, £2 a month for insurance works out so much more than buying a new phone
I find this thread odd now. Since RC7 Oxygen has just died, we keep getting promises of the release from Google but nothing yet (?). What used to be a thread which would pickup 4 pages of posts in a day with new ROMs and stuff is now dying
The Music app does not have an 'exit' button. And really no app should need one. So long as it is written correctly then it will not consume resources when not in use... however a Task Killer can be of use sometimes
Also I recommend PowerAMP for playing music... free trial available, about £4 to buy.
